Obama Lets Russia Expand Nuclear Arsenal PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, Dec 1, 2009, 08:53 AM

Atom Russia.jpgPresident Barack Obama is doing his best to revive the foreign policy principles of former President Jimmy Carter. He has befriended Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, while gladly accepting his anti-American book as a gift. Obama also took trips to the Middle East and Asia where he bowed in a surrogate manner to his counterparts, although world leaders didn't reciprocate with a bow towards him.

Recently, President Obama has succumbed to the scrutiny of the Nobel Peace Prize committee by buckling under the pressure of world leaders who perceive the U.S. as a villainous nation and undeserving of the status as a first-world country. Hence, Obama is permitting Russia to expand its nuclear arsenal.

According to the Washington Times, "the United States is about to lose a key arms-control tool from the closing days of the Cold War - the right to station American observers in Russia to count the long-range missiles leaving its asembly line."

The closure of full-time, on-site access will likely spark outrage in congress, with insiders from both political parties arguing over whether the George W. Bush or Obama administration should be held responsible.

Republicans are fearful that the previously undisclosed agreement between the Kremlin and the Obama administration in October, which formalizes the inspectors' departure this Saturday. They warn, this will crush Washington's ability to enforce Moscow's compliance with agreed reductions in its nuclear arsenal.

As reported by the Washington Times, "Democrats, on the other hand, insist they were 'stuck' with an agreement reached late last year between the Bush administration and Moscow but not made public. This, they said, left the Obama team no choice."

The U.S.-staffed Votkinsk Portal Monitoring Facility operates under the terms of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START 1) at the Votkinsk Machine Building Plant, approximately 600 miles east of Moscow - the location where all Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are built.

The Russian leadership profile psychologists had Obama pegged as a wimp when he got it so incredibly wrong on the Russian invasion of Georgia.

Then he gave up the Missile Defense Shield that was already a done deal, but got NOTHING in return.

But, that wasn't enough for Obama. He has agreed, for the first time ever, to allow Russian military generals and scientists to inspect America's top secret nuclear establishments. But, Russia made no reciprocal agreement for Americans.

Obama has volunteered to dramatically cut back our nuclear arms. WE have lip service, but no pledge to do so by the Russians.

Russia is developing a submarine base and deep water port in Venezuela, and is building weapons manufacturing plants. They are doing all of this in our sphere of influence, something Bush would never have allowed them to do, because they know Obama will do nothing about it.

Obama has effectively surrendered to the Russians, and hasn't gotten squat in the terms of surrender.

The inability for American inspectors to count new Russian missiles will effectively bring an end to the Reagan Doctrine of "Trust, but verify", and make a joke out of parity agreements used in disarmament agreements.

As previously stated, President Obama, for the first time, has given permission for Russian inspectors to inspect our nuclear sites, but there is no reciprocal agreement or ability. Not only has no president ever done this, but no president would EVER do this.

Vladimir Putin, rich with oil money, wants to write a new end to the Cold War, and President Obama seems intent upon letting him, at little or no cost.

If President Obama does not change course quickly with Russia, and regain the initiative supercharged from winning the Cold War, the imbalance will eventually and inevitably set up a confrontation that will be devastating, and which we will lose.

Even the war in Afghanistan has serious Russian components. They are heavily invested in our losing in that tribal and essentially borderless nightmare of a country. They lose considerable prestige if America can tame what others could not. But, they also understand President Obama's goal is not "winning", but getting out with the least amount of political damage.

He'll confirm that tonight; not in those words, but in the goal.

The Russians will, no doubt, be applauding even louder than the West Point cadets being used as an applauding backdrop, no matter what the President says.

To date, Mr. Obama's handling of the Russians has been as abysmal as it has been dangerous.

I hope that will soon change.

We just surrendered to the Taliban and told them we'd be out in 18 months, and they could have their Muslimdom back.
