Houston Mayor White Ready to Run for Governor PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, Nov 24, 2009, 09:18 AM
Announcement White.bmpAndrea, the wife of Houston mayor Bill White, a Democrat, served the visiting ambassadors sandwiches in the living room of their spacious memorial-area home as several hours of negotiations set the stage for Monday's announcement that White is pondering switching from a campaign for the U.S. senate to bid for the Democratic nomination for governor of Texas. He deems it more likely that he could unseat Gov. Perry than defeat Sen. Hutchison when she camapaigns for re-election as U.S. senator.

A governor's race between Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Mayor Bill White will likely ensue. Mr. White poses as a greater challenge than Sen. Hutchison to Gov. Perry in the gubernatorial campaign, since the likely Democratic nominee will devote full-time to his campaign. The city of Houston will elect a new mayor in the coming days.

Nonetheless, about a month ago, a group of professional auditors have officially determined in a report that Mr. White single-handedly bankrupted Houston with a number of backroom deals, in which the city handed over sweetheart deals to Houston's rich and powerful elite. He's often criticized for utilizing a 'good-ol-boy' network in Houston to promote his political career.

Mayor White is already pulling some strings with Democratic Party establishment in Texas to enhance his political status.

As a result of that Sunday afternoon meeting," the Houston Chronicle reports that, "Democratic candidate Tom Schieffer - who was a Bush administration ambassador to Australia and Japan - announced Monday that he will withdraw from the race for governor to clear the path for White. Schieffer urged other Democrats in the race to drop out and join him in support of White."

Mr. Schieffer said, "we simply must get behind one candidate who can unite the Democratic Party and offer a credible alternative to the Republicans. Bill White is that candidate."

Afterwards, the mayor held a City Hall news conference to announce he will ponder a bid for the gubernatorial seat and make his announcement by Dec. 4.

He said, "I think it's time that we have new leadership in Austin. I'm disapointed at the failure to make real and tangible, significant progress on cutting dropout rates, improving school achievement, limiting tuition increases, fighting polluters, and I could go on-and-on."

While Mr. White served as mayor, he accomplished little to improve school standards in the city and environmental activists have frequently derided Houston as one of the worst polluting cities in the United States.

Rick Perry remains one of the luckiest politicians in Texas.

Kay Hutchinson, who could have given him quite a run in the Primary, is now trailing by double-digits, and has gone back on her word to resign to run. Voters remember things like that, no matter what the poll she recently commissioned says.

Tom Schieffer, who would have had broad appeal to moderates, and already would have liberals behind him, would have been a potentially tough candidate against Perry.

But, now, Schieffer has dropped out and endorsed White, who will try to make the campaign about education, and will fail because voters only want to talk about the economy, jobs, illegal aliens, and crime.

With Obama's numbers dropping like a rock, and his terrible handling of the economy, I can't imagine any Texas Democrat would be very excited about a statewide race.

Sometimes "luck" is just people being good. Texas "lucked out" when Vince Young ran for the endzone against USC on 4th and 5. Winners make their own luck. Rick Perry may have had some luck, but he has made a lot of his own luck.

White is the one who told a group of oil execs that we would have to reduce the energy sector by 20%...he certainly is an Obama-type Democract...someone who does not care for the many whoi make their living in the energy sector & expects us to sit in the dark with a bunch of "hair-brained" ideas that are a fraud! Wow! Isn't it great to want to run for governor with that type of policy!
