During the 2008 presidential campaign, some conservative talk show hosts were derided for using the full name of Barack Hussein Obama when they spoke about the Democratic presidential nominee. Some careers were nearly ruined over the so-called hate speech. Yet surprisingly, Newsweek had just published in print its November 16 edtion and the left-leaning magazine referred to the U.S. president as Barack Hussein Obama in its first paragraph on an article about Muslim-extremism.
As quoted by Newsweek, "when young Barack Hussein Obama lived with his American mother and Indonesian stepfather in Jakarta nearly 40 years ago, the Muslims of Southeast Asia were renowned for their moderation. Women may have covered their hair with a light scarf but almost none veiled their faces. It was the rare Muslim man who grew a beard, and many drank with non-Muslim friends." Currently, as Obama prepares to get acquainted with southeast Asia's leaders in Singapore, all that, and more, is diverging. Moderation is deemed suspect, as many of the region's quarter billion Muslims - more than in the Middle East - revert to the birthplace of Islam to reaffirm their religious identity. Although still a distinct, minority, fundamentalists are demanding - and obtaining, a more significant role for Sharia, or religious law, in family life and in the life of the country. The reporter, Lewis M. Simons of Newsweek, writes, "in recent travel, I found signs of the drift throughout the region's five major Islamic centers: Indonesia, Malaysia, the southern Philippines, southern Thailand, and Singapore. Nowhere was it more jarring than Bulukumba, on the orchid-shaped Indonesian island of Sulawesi. With 350,000 people, mostly farmers whose holdings are shrinking as the poulation booms, Bulukumba is one of the poorest places on the island, and religious rule has supplanted the secular. In 2006, radical clergy, backed by sympathetic local politicians, military and police officers, imposed Sharia over constitutional law. Today, Bulukumba is just one of more than two dozen such towns in the archipelago. Women are required to wear the Jihab, as headscarf. Wage earners are required to contribute 2.5 percent of their income as zakat, or alms. Children by the age of 7 must prove reading proficiency of the Quran an in Arabic to qualify for elementary school. So must couples seeking approval to marry and civil servants applying for promotion." written by Carlos Zaldivar , November 21, 2009 If Catholics were half as faithful as Muslims, another would be the story. I'm sure Muslims would see a very attractive Faith other than the religion Muhammad founded.

written by Shea , November 22, 2009 The fact that the US President is a Muslim says it all! He must be impeached for fraud and deception in an election. The US is headed for serious danger! Oprah is most likely leaving her show to assist this crook gain more black supports and perks from his position in office. The White House should be called now the Black House.

written by Shadrach , November 23, 2009 Shea: Please tell me you are not serious. Obama's open profession of Christian faith is open and apparent. As for Tom - please, this is a non-story as there is no hypocrisy here. When Newsweek used his middle name, there was no anger, no accusation, and no false use of guilt by association (through a name his Dad gave him, no less). This reminds me of the old saying to describe the clear difference between intentional injury and accidental action: "Even a dog knows the difference between being tripped over and being kicked." When the right repeats BHO almost as a chant, even a dog knows this is inteded as a kick. When the MSM uses it as background when discussing a Muslim region of the world, even a dog knows this is not a "kick."

written by John Weekley , November 23, 2009 Deeply bowing and kissing the ring of the Saudi King (who is an Islamic religious figure) is not something any other American president would do, and no Christian would do. Obama attended for over 20 years a radical church that preached Black Liberation Theology, a Marxist anti-American, anti-Jewish, anti-Capitalism, anti-white and anti-establishment "theology" (more like dogma). His being a Muslim would not prevent his being welcome there. It has virtually nothing to do with Jesus Christ, and finds God useful only in getting even with those perceived to have been unkind to black people. It is mostly about "social justice" and getting even with white people. I don't remember those sentiments in the New Testament.

written by Shadrach , November 23, 2009 John: I do not believe or adhere to liberation theology. However, as a Christian and a Capitalist, I have to admit that there is neither Capitalism, Socialism, nor Communism in the Bible. All of these are post-biblical explanations of human economic activity that are subject to being criticized by ministers who see their excesses. As a minister in a Capitalist society, I would expect Rev. Wright to preach against the excesses of Capitalism, since these are the pastoral issues his congregation is dealing with. However, if you had listened to even one complete sermon of the Rev. Wright, you would know he completely finds salvation only through Christ; that he mentions the past suffering of blacks at the hands of whites, only to say that "Christ suffered more and forgave, so should we. If Whitey won't t help you change your life, Jesus will." 99% of what Wright preached was basic Gospel applied to a hellish part of the inner city. Considering that every one of his sermons for the last 20 years is recorded and easily available, do you not find it funny that FOX news could only find 3 or 4 sermons with anything offensive? Even a minister can be narrow minded, mistaken, and misinformed. Even so, the vast majority of what that church teaches is that living the gospel means feeding the poor, helping the sick and educating the uneducated. It is unfortunate, that to do so in inner city Chicago, Rev. Wright hate to throw in the "sins of White Folk," and the vestiges of slavery in a few, unfortunate sermons. For that sin, he and his Church's witness has been forever diminished. Even so, the Bible speaks a lot about both personal salvation and social justice. Read the whole book. Amos and Micah speak a lot about how important social justice is to God. While Matthew and Luke are a good start for personal salvation, Amos and Micah are needed to understand the fullness of God's vision for the way Christians will work in the world. Finally, I do not like it when any person's pastor becomes a political issue. There are plenty of Right Wing pastors that have said hateful, ignorant things too. I want to know about a politician's words, not his Pastor's statements. Write comment
