Wal-Mart to Sell "Mom" and "Dad" Coffins PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Oct 30, 2009, 12:07 PM

Coffin Wal-Mart.jpgWal-Mart guarantees the lowest prices against its competitors on all items it sells, which now include coffins. The world's largest retailer now plans to hold on to cusomers even into their graves.

The BBC News reports that, "prices range from a 'Mom' or 'Dad Remebered' steel coffin for $895, to a bronze model at $2,899."

The retailer is permitting customers to plan ahead by paying for the caskets over 12 months for no interest, which can be dispatched with 48 hours.

Wal-Mart already sales everything from baby diapers to engagement rings that crater to cradle-to-grave needs.

Ravi Jariwala, a spokesman for the supermarket giant, claimed the new coffin range was "a limited beta list to understand customer response."

Correspondents reveal that the retailer is offering caskets at prices which undercut many funeral homes.

"But," according to the BBC, "an industry spokesman said it was not unduly concerned about Wal-Mart's move, because he said the firm could not offer bereaved families the human touch."

The National Funeral Homes Director's Association, Pat Lynch, told the AP news agency that, "there's no question in my mind as a funeral director for nearly 40 years that the most critical element is the human contact."
