DA Watkins Blasts County Commissioners and Sheriff's Office PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Sep 16, 2009, 12:58 PM
Blast Watkins.jpgDallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins continues his feud against County Commissioner John Wiley Price and ridiculing Sheriff Lupe Valdez, another fellow Democrat, in the process. The D.A.'s office even e-mailed a press release to the Dallas Blog, which berates the county commissioners for not properly planning to provide "enough available beds at the jail to house individuals who may be arrested in the future."

D.A. Watkins' press secretary, Jamille Bradfield, told the Dallas Blog that the issuance of the press release was simply a response to the Dallas Morning News article about a so-called "tiff" between Watkins and Price. She claims that there is no "animosity" between the two most powerful African-American politicians in Dallas County.

The Morning News piece also addressed the issue that the Dallas County jail faces a grave threat of overcrowding. The D.A.'s office places the blame on the "county commissioners" for this dilemma.

Meanwhile, D.A. Watkins also took an indirect stab at Sheriff Lupe Valdez, without mentioning her name. His statement is quoted as saying that, "every time the population at the county jail approaches maximum capacity levels, and it occurs often, it is a reminder of poor planning during the design phase of the new jail facility."

I support the arguement of Mr. Watkins, it is not the job of the District Attorney to monitor the jail population never has. When I look back on the tenure of former D.A. Mr. Hill he never took the intitiative to monitor the jail population and during the period where overcrowding was a serious issue. What we the citizen of Dallas County are witnesses presently is a Commissioners Court who have used systemic power over the years without challenge, now that Mr. Watkins has challeneged them in what he has a right as an elected official to stand up for, he is being ostercized by insiders who want him to play the good ol boy game. Mr. Watkins has shown to be a man of conviction, and will fight for what he believes is politically correct, this is a style Dallas County is slowing accepting and will accept because Mr. Watkins is doing an outstanding job in office.
