The Washington Post reports that, "A May survey, just released, asked the question: With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life?" 33 percent of respondents identified themeselves as pro-life and 56 percent as pro-choice in 1995. Yet in May of this year, 51 percent claimed they were pro-life and 42 percent said pro-choice. Just a year earlier, 50 percent of Americans surveyed identified themselves as pro-choice and 44 percent as pro-life. written by Shadrach , August 24, 2009 Tom: This is a good article. As always, the issues are more complicated than a single black and white question. Digging deeper into the survey, only 23% are pro-life in all circumstances, and only 22% are pro-choice in all circumstances. The middle that think it should be legal under certain circumstances is 53%. The full survey is available here. http://www.gallup.com/poll/118399/More-Americans-Pro-Life-Than-Pro-Choice-First-Time.aspx The problem is that even though the poll shows 33% of Democrats are pro-life and 26% of Republicans are pro-choice, both parties want to push folks to the extremes. Even though I am pro-life religiously, many will not allow me to use that title politically merely because I believe that there should be exceptions for rape, incest, inability to survive outside the womb, and the life of the mother. Politics aside, I am happy that our nation is moving to a greater degree of honoring life. Write comment
