Candle-lit dinners are also an unrecognized source of indoor air pollution. Yet al Gore and Ralph Nader have not issued any public statements on this pertinent ecological issue.
On Wednesday, the American Chemical Association announced that "emission-products of petroleum-based candles in nonventilated enclosed areas" are potentially dangerous to your health. Ruhullah Massoudi, a chemistry profesor at South Carolina State University who analyzed the airborne products of burning candles, said, "an occassional paraffin candle and its emissions will not likely affect you. But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years or lighting them frequently in an un-ventilated bathroom around a tub, for example, may cause problems." According to the Washington Times, "he also suggested that some people who suffer from indoor allergies or respiratory irritations might in fact be reacting to air pollutants from burning candles. Candles made from beswax or soy, though more pricey, are "apparently are healthier," Mr. Massoudi adds. He presented his findings during the society's annual meeting in Washington." Nowadays, the eco-conscious can lay claim to a new source of guilt. Hence, the gren police can target these so-called pollutants. Hypochondriacs can balk at romantic dinners under the guise of protecting their health. Perhaps, the study could also have profound repurcussions on politicians engaging in romantic trysts and journalists intending to woo sources. General manager Philip Gates of charlie Palmer Steak, a romantic and sophisticated restaurant within a block of the U.S. Capitol, said, "well, this is interesting. But I counter that science with more science. Candles also produce negative ions, and negative ions are associated with a sense of well-being and happiness. Negative ions, positive vibes." written by AlGore , August 23, 2009 TOM : Thank heavens that you have brought up this important topic. I apologize for not getting a statement out sooner. OH !! My goodness !!!! I have been so busy saving the world and enjoying myself that I am afraid I got behind the curve here. Candles are BAD : really BAAD. Don't use candles : they will kill the earth with global warming because they have fire, and they will kill you with cancer or someother bad disease. So DO NOT use them ever again.

written by furrpiece , August 23, 2009 Algore, while your arrival with help is always a mixed blessing, I'm hoping you can help ME with a research challenge. Reviewing the 5,000 years since the Egyptians began using candles, I'm have a devil of a time documenting all of those cancer deaths. In fact, the more likely hazard for amorous dinning seems to be the fire hazard of personal accidents or entire buildings being consumed. The other interesting item I have observed is that I don't a single person who uses candles for intimate dinning who doesn't also leave the central air running. Help me out with this, kindly.

written by Bob Reagan , August 23, 2009 Actually, the last time we lit candles for intimate dining was when the power predictably went out in our neighborhood, as it is wont to do whenever we have a wind gust over 5 mph. Must have been a slow news day.

written by Bill Marvel , August 24, 2009 Yes, yes. And "some scientists" -- your phrase, not mine -- tie their shoe laces together and fall down the front steps every morning. But the majority do not. What's you point?

written by AlGore , August 25, 2009 FURRPIECE : I did reply to you a couple of days back, and in the reply I tried to help you, DUMMY that you are ...... BUT it looks like who ever posts these notes from you and me made an error, and posted your own note as a reply to your own note, instead of posting my reply. SEE WHAT HAPPENS when a sensible and patient and very nice, far to the left "Deomocrat" like me tries to reason with you neanderthal idiot Republicans : it never works out right. It is as if I tried to reason with Apes : so just stay away from the CANDLES and keep the whole world safe. Write comment

Some scientists are waging a public relations campaign to convince the public that enjoying a candle-lit dinner with a loved-one can be hazardous to the couple's health. They insist that candles may cause cancer since paraffin wax candles produce evocative ambience, which are recognized as human carcinogens.
