The El Paso Times quotes Moreno as saying, "advising the staff about the closing today was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Our patients have always been our first priority, and we are still doing everything we can to provide transfer services. We made this decision with them in mind and in their best interests, and we hope they understand that." Apparently, financial pressures necessitated the closing when Moren was discussing the plight while holding back tears. The sudden announcement that Planned Parenthood is shutting down after 72 years in El Paso caught also health care providers in shock. Most of the 11,000 females receiving family planning and reporoductive health care have not been given notice of the closing or received referrals to another provider. The unexpected shutdown caised many of those left in the dark to become irate. The El Paso Times reports that, "when the organization was founded in 1937 as Mothers Health Center, the Planned Parenthood moevement's founder and controversial women's rights advocate Margaret Sanger visited El Paso to speak about the need for birth control." Pro-life adocates have been targetting the organization since its founding in El Paso, even thogh it claimed it was not performing abortion in the city. Several of these medical providers listed by Planned Parenthood as alternative care choices for their patients discovered Friday that they must soon take on many of the organization's clients. some consider it difficult to comprehend that the end has come for the organization in El Paso. The closing announcement on Friday was not the first blow to Planned Parenhood in regards to the community's healthcare system. The departure of Planned Parenthood occurs as the community continues to battle to draw in more health-care providers.
