Mrs. Van de Putte is quoted as saying that, "just because one can win the Democratic nomination for governor doesn't mean one should, unless he or she is best positioned to defeat the Republican nominee in the fall." She's pleading with Democratic Sen Kirk Watson of Austin to shoot for the seat held by GOP Gov. Rick Perry.
Watson claimed he'll likely come to a decision at the summer's end. The Houston Chronicle reports that, "Van de Putte said if Watson declines, Democrats should 'recruit and support someone who, like Watson, is energetic, pragmatic, focused, and smart, and who can fully energize Democratic supporters while also attracting a broad range of independent voters in every region of the state." Mrs. Van de Putte ridiculed Schieffer - a friend of Republican George W. Bush who functioned as an ambassador during his administration. Yet, she noted that Scheffer is "fine and decent" man, but failed to excite the Democratic base. Schieffer, who intends to formally announce his bid today, issued a statement about Mrs. Van de Putte saying that she "would have been a formidable opponent in the Democratic primary ... I lok forward to sitting down with her to discuss muy candidacy because I believe I can be the kind of candidate she can support, both in the Democratic primary and the general election." Van de Putte announced that she's not running since she doesn't want to place her family through a rigorous campaign, citing Perry and his anticipated GOP primary rival, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. The Chronicle quotes Perry spokesman Mark miner as saying, "her comments show the Democratic Party to be in complete disarray. On the eve of one Democrat making an announcement, the chair of the (Senate) Democratic Caucus is actually looking for another candidate."
