Witches Claim "Persecution" over Church Hall Ban PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sat, Jun 20, 2009, 11:14 AM

Catholic Witches.jpgA witches coven is claiming persecution after it was banned from a Roman Catholic Church hall for wanting to participate in pagan ceremonies during a Halloween party

According to the Daily Telegraph of London, "Sandra Davis, the high-priestess' of Crystal Cauldron mgroup in Stockport, Greater Manchester, said she was shocked to be told that the pagan group was not considered to be compatible with the church's 'ethos.'"

Mrs. Davis, 61, intended to book Our Lady's Social Club in Shaw Heath, Stockport for the organization's annual "Witches Ball" due to be held in October.

She wanted to attract up to 150 people to the social evening for a buffet dinner as music would be performed by an ABBA tribute band (perhaps the Church isn't a fan of ABBA), and chose the hall since it had disabled access.

Yet, when she went to pay for the reservation, she was informed by the manager that the Diocese of Shrewsbury, which owns the center, had refused to grant permission for the organization to use it.

Witch Davis is quoted as saying, "it makes you think that there is still a little bit of that attitude from the past of the Catholics wanting to burn witches. I thought we made progress, that we could accept other people's religious paths."

Mrs. Davis, who has 11 grandcildren, sacrificed her former position in a forklift company to establish the Crystal Cauldron, where she is ceremoniously nicknamed, "Amethyst Selmeselene."

As reported by the Telegraph, "based in a former post office, the 30-strong group runs on the internet as well as organizing a children's group called 'Little Crystals.'"

As its designated charity, it also supports a local cat sanctuary.

Nonetheless, Mrs. Davis has since secured a new venue for the ball that she hopes will become an annual fixture in the village.

A spokesman for the Roman Catholic diocese of Shrewsbury, Rev. John Joyce, explained that it was "out of the question" for a group of witches to use its facilities.

I think the Church was simply surprised that witches wanted to do something in England at that time, what with the UN and Congress being in session.
