Sheriff Lupe Valdez Gives Low-Quality Vests to Officers PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, Jun 16, 2009, 12:22 PM

Bullet Valdez.jpgFor any cop who wears a bullet-proof vest, it can be a life-saving piece of equipment. But any vest, made of questionable materials or noted for not meeting the highest-standards of quality, can severely harm the morale of a police department, since it sends the message that the boss-in-charge does not place the safety of the officers as the highest-priority.

Hence, Dallas County Commissioner Maureen Dickey, a Republican, expressed grave concerns that Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez, a Democrat, is giving bullet-proof vests, which fail to meet the highest standards, to her fellow deputies and officers, who must confront criminals on a daily basis.

Mrs. Dickey fears for the safety of these employees and pointed out that these vests are not of similar quality as those used by the Dallas Police Department. She directly spoke of the problem with county administrators at a ‘commissioners court’ public hearing this morning.

Her comments about the vests eventually led to a conversation among the county commissioners about Sheriff Valdez’s failure to get the county jail to pass state inspections. They also discussed future efforts to improve jail conditions, such as fixing the fire-alarm systems.

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price publicly admitted that further improvements are necessary to meet state jail inspections. He gave a dire warning that the County will soon get an “ambush” of phone calls from state government officials.

The best the lowest bid can buy!!!!!! Talk to that idiot Ryan Brown. The Sheriff and the commissioners don't care. They aren't the ones working out on the streets.

The worst thing about a cheap vest is that an officer in a shooting situation believes he has an extra layer of protection, and is willing to take risks he would NOT take otherwise take.

That gets people killed.

How long are you going to keep letting Mr. McGregor keep printing lies? This happens over and over and over and over. Almost every Commissioners Court meeting he attends he lies about. I was there at the meeting, and the accounts in this story are completely false.
First off, the discussion in Commissioners Court was regardinga grant that will pay the county back for the purchase of vests for officers. It has nothing to do with the Sheriff's Department specifically, it was about all county law enforcement. Though the discussion was about the grant to pay for vests, Commissioner Dickey did raise the question about the quality of the vests purchased. She was cut off fairly quickly since the discussion was about the grant, not the vests. It was pointed out to her that the discussion was regarding a grant to pay for all vests, regardless of quliaty.
The sheriff, nor the constables, nor the DA's office, nor the Fire Marshals office makes the decision on what vest to purchase, the COUNTY PURCHASING DEPT. makes those calls in accordance with legal bid requirements, along with the budget office. They do allow input from the departments affected, but in the end, its the county's call.
For this moron reporter to to report that this discussion had anything to do with the sheriff specifically is an outright LIE. The discussion also did not "lead to" any discussion about the jail. There was an agenda item about the COUNTY's response to the jail inspection, but NOTHING about the sheriff specifically.
I for one am tired of your lies and false reporting of events.
Law enforcement officers dont particularly appreciate it when a reporter splashes the fact that their vests may be of reduced effectiveness all over the news. You moron. Are you trying to get an officer killed? Sure looks like it you moron. I hope the owners of this blog fire your pathetic lying rear end asap.
To the blog owners: Please get the transcript of the Commissioners Court session for June 16th, read it, then fire McGregor.
