The Washington Post reports that, “in real life, Perle was the ideological architect of the Iraq war and of the Bush doctrine of preemptive attack. But at (a) forum of foreign policy intellectuals, he created a fantastic world in which: 1. Perle is not a neoconservative. 2. Neoconservatives do not exist. 3. Even if neoconservatives did exist, they certainly couldn’t be blamed for the disasters of the past eight years.” Perle made his shocking comments at an event hosted by National Interest magazine. He said, “there is no such thing as a neoconservative foreign policy. It is a left critique of what is believed by the commentator to be a right-wing policy.” Perle denied he co-authored a 1996 report that is widely seen as he cornerstone of neoconservative foreign policy. He claimed, “my name was not on it because I signed up for the study group. I didn’t approve it. I didn’t read it. He also refused to admit that he signed two letters addressed to then president Bush, which provided a “moral” basis to Middle East policy and called for military means to remove Saddam Hussein. Perle maintained that Bush probably never read the statements which enshrined neoconservative themes such as preemptive war and using American power to spread freedom for the sake of a National Security Strategy. According to the Washington Post, “the Prince of Darkness - so-dubbed during his days opposing arms control in the Reagan Pentagon - was not about to let details get in the way of his argument that ‘50 million conspiracy theorists have it wrong’ as the subtitle of his article puts it. ‘I see a number of people here who believe and have expressed themselves abundantly that there is a neoconservative foreign policy and it was the policy that dominated the Bush administration, and they ascribe to it responsibility for the deplorable state of the world,’ Perle told the foreign policy luminaries at yesterday’s lunch. ‘None of that is, true, of course.’” To read the entire article from the Washington Post, link here: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
