Gay Activists Seek Revenge against Mormons PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Dec 1, 2008, 03:14 PM

In the nearly four weeks after Election Day, gay activists and thousands of their supporters have demonstrated outside of Mormon temples around the nation, protesting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints endorsement for California’s Proposition 8, the ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage in the Golden State.

According to Fox News, “there have been calls to boycott the annual Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah; some activists have called for a boycott of the entire state of Utah. Protestors have defaced some church buildings, and in Arapaho County, Colo., the Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible hate crime – the torching of the Book of Mormon on a Church’s doorstep.”

The state of California has even announced that it is investigating the church’s involvement in Proposition 8 that was approved by a vote of 52 percent to 48 percent and, barring a Supreme Court overturn, will abolish gay marriage in the state.

Nonetheless, the Mormons are being singled out unfairly.

Other groups, more notably African-Americans and other churches and religious denominations, voted as a large majority for Prop. 8. Yet nobody has seen gay marriage proponents slamming on the doors of black-oriented community centers or churches. No one has demanded a boycott of black-owned businesses.

Exit polls after the Nov. 4 ballot revealed that 70 percent of African-American voters and more than half of Latino voters voted yes on Proposition 8. Almost two-thirds of self-identified Christians endorsed the ban, and married voters and parents also showed strong support. The Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and evangelical groups in California also urged for a ban on gay marriage.

But the Mormon Church is the only target. Evan Wolfe, executive director of Freedom to Marry, a New York-based organization that supports same-sex marriage, explained that it’s because of the money.

Mr. Wolfe is quoted by Fox News as saying, “the Mormon Church hierarchy led the way on this attack on gay families and the California constitution. They provided more than half the funding. They provided the ground troops and were a major political force in a way that no other group was.

Mr. Wolfe claimed the Mormon Church led a deceptive campaign to take away the so-called rights of gay people.

Soon after the California Supreme Court ruled that a ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, the Mormon Church back in June issued a letter to Mormons announcing its support of Prop. 8, which was designed to overturn the ruling. Subsequently, the church’s members contributed millions of dollars to support the Yes on 8 campaign.

And well they should "seek revenge" (really Tom, your diction is absurd) against Mormans. No one has done more to destroy human rights than Mormans. If anyone doubts this, please read "Under The Banner of Heaven". Of course, as a TCU grad, I can take my Morman hatred out through football as we play BYU and UTAH among other things.

This may be like "Armageddon".

Some folks say that LDS 'activists' have already sought revenge against Texas : at the Governor's Mansion.

Will 'activists' from both side [Gay and LDS] end up seeking 'revenge' against each other in an ugly cycle reminiscent of the Northern Ireland conflict ? Let us hope not.

Perhaps the Gays should move into a compound and allow one spouse to take on several (same sex) spouses.

Perhaps there should be a segment of Gays move into a compound and allow one person to marry several other persons of the same sex.
