FormerDallasCity Council member, Jerry Bartos, died on Thanksgiving Day after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 5 at Our Redeemer Church at 7611 Park Lane, in Dallas.
John Weekley said of Jerry, “he was, indeed a very special person on so many levels, and his love of Dallas was unsurpassed.”
I worked with Jerry Bartos on many issues and always found him to be a man of political principle who tried to do what he thought was right for the city of Dallas. He fought hard for the 10-4-1 districting plan which the voters of Dallas approved, only to have the election thrown out by a liberal judge Jerry Buchmeyer.
A successful small businessman, Jerry retired from politics years ago and seemed disappointed at what had become of his beloved city of Dallas when we last talked more than a year ago. He was a true conservative in the best sense of that word. I consider myself fortunate to be able to call Jerry Bartos a friend of mine. We will miss him.
Jerry is survived by his children – Marla, Sara, Julie and Meg. They noted that, when their father was a young man of 25, Jerry wrote an essay quoting Abraham Lincoln:
“When I’m gone, I hope they will only say of me ‘where he found growing a weed, he pulled it and there planted a flower.’”
Jerry Bartos planted a lot of flowers. May his soul rest in peace.
I was saddened to hear about Jerry's passing. I knew him back in the early 90's when he was on the city council.
I worked for JB as a council aide. It was one of my first jobs right out of college and was one of the best experiences of my professional and personal life.
JB was tough, but always fair and with a quick sense of humor. It wasn't always easy meeting his expectations, but as I've gotten older I realize life's lessons seldom are.
His convictions were legendary and his passion for the city of Dallas was limitless. He may not have always been on the majority when it came to city votes, but he had the respect and admiration of everyone.
Jerry helped shape my life and I will always treasure the time we had.
JB - you will be missed.
