Opponents of a convention center hotel turned in enough petition signatures to snag a place on a May ballot for Dallasites to vote on whether they want the city to own a hotel. But that apparently isn't stopping city officials from going ahead with their plans for the city to get into the hotel business. Anne Raymond, leader of Citizens Against the Taxpayer-Owned Hotel, has called on the city council to halt its hotel spending and allow the democratic process to take place. But Mayor Tom Leppert said the process will go forward, according to the Dallas News. That includes naming a hotel operator later this month and selling revenue bonds in January to fund construction of the hotel. What happens now if citizens reject the idea and the train has already left the station?
