More statements from the speaker's race PDF Print E-mail
by Will Lutz    Fri, Nov 7, 2008, 04:07 PM

We have received more statements from speaker candidates. Rep. Jim Keffer (R-Eastland) welcomed new candidates into the race: "In the last 24 hours, I have been contacted by several of the existing and some potentially new Democrat and Republican candidates for Speaker that are actively engaged in the process of forming their own coalitions for Speaker. A Speaker should be a coalition builder, and I look forward to continuing my participation in this new and open process of selecting the next Speaker."

Meanwhile, we ran into Rep. Tommy Merritt at the Capitol recently. "My platform is to be a fair speaker. To work with the members to help them represent their district. I believe that with the narrowing of the vote, that if we have a partisan speaker, it will be a train wreck. I believe that a person should be able to vote for the speaker in a format that is fair." Specifically, Merritt called for a ballot box, where the ballots are destroyed after they have been counted "just like any other election."

Will,
My fear is "the house" will spend most of the session fighting over the speaker position while allowing important business to pass by the wayside.

Well, based on the last two sessions, not much "important" business can get done with Mr. Craddick as Speaker.

Byron - we can probably do without most of the "important business" they are considering. When I look at the harmful results of most of the U.S. Congress' "important business" over the years, I wish they had never met.

I think all Congressmen should be banned from any future lobbying after they leave office. They spend too much time catering to lobbyists, setting themselves up for future profiting. Ron paul raised $25 million of honest money. He owed nothing to lobbyists and special interests. What a shame republicans did not listen to his message. There is a reason why he was so successful in raising this kind of money. He should be a model for future office holders.

Special Interest money ("i.e the Investment banks) has corrupted our Congress and hurt America and Americans.

Speaking of Jim Keffer -what a shame that there is once again no place for Bill Keffer in the texas legislature. I think Bill should move to a republican safe District where he can increase his chances of getting elected. Voters do not seem to be able to recognize the distinctions between the good Republicans and the not so good republicans.
