Perhaps the most puzzling aspect of this year’s presidential election is the steadfast refusal of voters and media outlets to more fully vet Barack Obama. Many questions remain about his experiences, relationships, and past—questions that would have destroyed the political prospects of any other candidate. The surge of support for Obama can be explained in only one way: Voters have deliberately decided to turn a blind eye to the many problems with his candidacy.
The willingness of voters to take such a huge risk on a man who is (for all intents and purposes) an unknown quantity is bewildering, to say the least. Presumably some voters are motivated by Bush-hatred and a desire for change. They fail to question where they are going as long as they can leave the current situation. Other voters (for better or for worse) are motivated by racial considerations. They want to see a black man elected president. They are so intent on their goal that they have forgotten to ask if this black man should be president.
These voters are so tunnel-visioned that they have deliberately ignored aspects of Obama’s life that should make them think twice (or three, or four times) before casting their vote for him.
First, Obama’s supporters have chosen to ignore a lack of experience that should make them shudder. Obama may be charismatic and articulate, but he has never acted in an executive capacity. Worse, his tenure in the Illinois state senate demonstrated his occasional inability to make tough decisions. Nearly 130 times, he failed to decide whether legislation should be passed or rejected, instead voting "present." Today, Obama serves in the U.S. Senate. Yet his accomplishments in that body are so vague and illusory that his supporters have often been unable to cite examples of them when directly asked. Indeed, Obama has held the job for less than four years—and he’s spent most of that time on the campaign trail. As a result, the experiences that he’s gained in the Senate have done little to prepare him for the more daunting task of serving as the nation’s chief executive.
Honestly, the fact that Obama bothered to put "community organizer" on his resume at all should have served as the first, glaring clue that his resume is thin. Much too thin for the future leader of the free world.
Second, voters have been willfully blind to Obama’s naiveté when it comes to foreign affairs. They excuse his early and ill-advised statement that he would "be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of [his] administration, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea." Obama since seems to have recognized his rookie mistake—although it’s unclear if he thinks the mistake was meeting with these leaders or saying out loud that he would meet with them. Either way, the statement should have gotten voters’ attention. Voters similarly ignored Obama’s uncertainty regarding the right course of action during the Georgia-Russia dispute this summer. They should pay more attention. Such imprudence and uncertainty in decision-making will take a toll on America’s national security.
Third, voters have not questioned Obama’s contradictory statements on several important issues. For instance, Obama often allied himself with pro-Palestinian individuals in the past. But as a presidential candidate, he’s changed his tune, claiming that his true sentiments are more pro-Israeli. Similarly, he once stated that his administration would withdraw troops from Iraq immediately, regardless of what American commanders advised. Now he’s softened that stance, claiming that he would listen to the commanders’ advice. His positions on other economic and energy issues have likewise shifted over time. But no one seems interested in investigating his inconsistent statements.
Finally, Obama’s relationships with a whole host of questionable characters are (mysteriously) deemed unacceptable topics of conversation—the type of claims that only conspiracy theorists would discuss. But if John McCain’s political career had been kicked off from the home of an unrepentant domestic terrorist, voters would hear no end of it. And, of course, if McCain had once given a speech in which he described a pro-Palestinian terrorist as someone worth learning from, every network news anchor would consider it worth discussing ad nauseam. Finally, if McCain had purchased (one of his seven!) homes in a sweetheart deal with a convicted felon . . . Well, you get the picture. Obama’s relationships with these and other individuals are important. But they have instead been lightly dismissed as irrelevant.
This columnist joins the ranks of those who want the Bush administration to be over. And she joins those who think that election of a black president would be good for racial harmony in this country. But neither goal justifies a failure to fully investigate the background of one of the two major parties’ presidential candidates.
America’s failure to vet Obama will come back to haunt us if he is elected on Tuesday.
And so it begins - the de-legitimaization of Obama's election. It's the voters' fault! Tara, with all due respect, Barack Obama has been fully vetted by the American public. Give the guy some credit! He's beaten the Clinton poltical machine and has been running in the public eye for almost two years now. Americans are very comfortable with the notion of an Obama presidency. He has the highest favorability rating of any non-incumbent candidate in sixteen years. It's not that America has failed to vet Obama. It is the falsehoods and smears spread by the Republican National Committee, Fox News, the McCain campaign, Rush Limbaugh, et al, that have failed. You know the ones: Obama is a Communist, a Socialist, a domestic terrorist, an Arab, was schooled in a madrassa, he's a a Muslim, a Chicago gangster, has weapons of mass destruction, pals with terrorists, ad infinitum. Those attacks have failed, not the judgment of the American people. And thank you for not blaming the death of Vince Foster on Barack Obama.

Sorry for the typo. I meant de-legitimization. We'll be hearing a lot more of that from the right-wing.

He killed Vince Foster.
Paul, Senator Obama has gotten a free ride from the press. They question nothing he does.
Now on to more important subject. If Obama wins I am sending you a case of East Texas Barbque sauce. What do I get when McCain wins?

Paul, I was joking about the Vince Foster.
Do you think the NYTimes would withhold a potential damaging tape of McCain?
Do you think the SFChronicle would withhold a tape of McCain saying he would bankrupt the coal industry?
Do you think the media would have made an issue out of Ayers, etc if it had been McCain?
Do you think the media would have made an issue if McCain's aunt was living in the US illegally?
Do you think the media would have questioned McCain if some of his college records and his birth records had been sealed. (still a little suspicious about the Hawaii trip)
Do you think the media would have made an issue if McCain had said, "cling to their guns and religion?"
Do you think the media would have made an issue if McCain had changed his mind about using public funds in his campaign?
Do you think the media would have made an issue if McCain had said we were bombing innocent civilians and killing babies?"
What if McCain had made the "spread the wealth" statement? do you think the media would have gone after McCain or Joe the Plumber?
You know I can go on and on with things the media refused to cover.
I'm not saying they are all a big deal but what I am saying is the media would have jumped all over it if it had been McCain/Palin.

Byron, I too was joking about Vince Foster, as sad as that might be. I'm good for a pound of South Texas pecans. New crop. Shelled. May the best man win.

Not only is Obama the most investigated candidate (by the Clinton campaign, the McCain campaign, the RNC, Fox News) since Bill Clinton but he has written TWO best selling autobiographies. And yet all we hear is from the Right is how we "don't know anything about him". Or, alternatively the "liberal media" is "covering up" for him.
If conservatives are really in a mood to pursue coverups and "what the public isn't being told" they should start with the Whitehouse emails that were mysteriously purged or the millions of dollars that have disappeared in Iraq or Bush's National Guard records got "accidentally" destroyed just as the press started asking for them or why Harriet Myers and Karl Rove are ignoring their subpeonas to testify before Congress. Where is the "liberal media", indeed.
The good news is that the election hasn't been even been and already conservatives are doing a post-mortim on it and looking for a scapegoat. The message is bad, so blame the messenger.

Wow, a pecan pie. Come on McCain!!!

With all due respect, Barack Obama served as an Illinois Senator for 7 years. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 with 70% of the vote.
Barack Obama has written two books about his life, family and background. He holds a law degree from Harvard.
His experience as a community organizer (which was trashed by Sarah Neiman Marxist Palin) is a testimony to the extraordinary campaign and grassroots ground game he has played.
Barack Obama has received donations from little people like me who gave time and time again.
The people vetted Barack Obama a very long time ago.
Those who will never be at peace with Barack Obama's legitimacy are what's left of an increasingly intolerant Republican Party.
One has to only view Sarah Palin's rallies, many of which would be deemed potential lynch mob scenes and hate fests.
Yesterday I banged on 95 doors in Houston for Obama/Noriega/Skelly.
Tomorrow I will phone bank until my voice gives out.

Hi Libby,
I hope you have laryngitis tomorrow. Just kidding.
Maybe you can clear up a question or two I have about Senator Obama.
Why has the governor of Hawaii sealed his birth records?
Why do you think the government of Kenya has sealed anything about the Obama family until "after the presidential election?"
Do you find that the least bit suspicious?

This is another desperate attempt by Rush Limbaugh and the Party of Intolerance to delegitimatize Barack Obama.
All birth and death certificates are sealed. Only certain persons have access to them (the person or their family members).
Barack Obama's mother was an American citizen. Obama was born in Hawaii, a state. John McCain was born in the Panama Canal. Though not born in the U.S., McCain is a citizen b/c his parents were.
Since you are asking about records, how is that Sarah Palin, the youngest of the 4 candidates, has not yet released her medical records? What is up with that?
... written by Byron George , November 03, 2008
Libby, Why do you call republicans the party of intolerance? Maybe the party of concern, but intolerance makes it sound like I oppose Senator Obama because of his race. That could be further from the truth. Why would Barack not want his birth record released?
I tell you the truth. If Senator Obama wins this election I pray he doesn't delegitimise (sp) himself. I believe he is the great unknown.

That does it. I'm heading over to the Obama campaign headquarters in Houston right now.

lol, Libby you are a hoot. Good luck tomorrow and if Senator Obama loses the election, I will be kind and not rub it in too bad.

Clarification for some who might not know. Hoot=cool, fun, etc.

I apologize for my earlier comment questioning Senator Obama's recent trip to Hawaii and extend my sympathy to Mr. Obama and his family on the death of his grandmother.

Woe be us all! If only America would take the advice of conservatives once more! After all, their ideas have just worked out so well thus far...

Tara, too many Americans learned nothing from the similar charismatic ravings of another megalomaniac that led Germany down the path to ruin. If Obama wins, America will prove once again that humanity can only repeat the errors of history that always lead to the same ultimate ruin. Until now,I always thought Americans, of all people, would never reject their freedom and opportunity. But I was wrong, freedom has been taken for granted while it was being corrupted by socialism from within. Democracy has indeed always borne the seeds of its own destruction. If Obama wins, socialism will spread its errors over another conquest and the nation our forefathers intended, that has been protected by American patriots who will have given their lives in vain to defend, will ultimately crumble into the dust destroyed by the guilt of genocide that Obama clearly intends to perpetuate. God will not be mocked forever! We can no longer ask for his blessing –only for his mercy, and if Obama wins it will be too late for that. Slightly over half of the American people will be condemned by their complicity in his guilt.

My concern is that is that Obama will move to shut down dissent. Hick kicked 3 reporters off his plane because their papers supported McCain. The Dems tried to destroy Joe the Plummer for asking an unscripted question. I expect the Dems to move quickly on the "fairness doctrine" to shut down Talk Radio and to move against the Fox News Network.
