1st Graders Take Field Trip to Same-sex Wedding PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Oct 13, 2008, 04:22 PM

On Friday, a group of San Francisco first graders took an unusual trip to City Hall to fling rose petals on their just-married lesbian teacher – placing the public school children at the center of a ferocious election battle over the fate of same-sex marriage.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “the 18 Creative Arts Charter School students took a Mini bus and walked a block at noon to toss rose petals and blow bubbles on their just-married teacher Erin Carder and her wife Kerri McCoy, giggling and squealing as they mobbed their teacher with hugs.”

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom officiated over the ceremony. A parent suggested that the students take a field trip to attend the lesbian wedding.

Liz Jaroslow, the school’s interim director, claimed the field trip served an academic purpose. She wanted students to understand the historic significance of same-sex marriage and encourage first-graders to take a stand in support of the homosexual political agenda.

Administrators of the Creative Arts School admitted that the field trip is controversial, but they didn’t consider it a big deal, because same-sex marriage is legal they noted.

The parents of the students are planning to produce a video with the children describing what marriage means to them.

According to the SF Chronicle, “as is the case with all field trips, parents had to give their permission and could choose to opt out of the trip. Two families did. Those children spent the duration of the 90-minute field trip back at school with another first-grade class, the interim director said.”

Jaroslow claimed their field trip should not be considered controversial and she believed her decision to sponsor the outing was worth risking her job over it.

Bothers me that they missed class for a wedding.
If it was something voluntary on a Saturday, then I wouldn't see the big deal.
But they missed class for a wedding.... something that probably wouldn't have happened if it wasn't a same sex wedding.
Of course if this same school allowed students to attend a traditional wedding as a field trip, then I don't see this as a problem.

First graders? Leave them out of your sick fight. BTW, I noticed in the article that it said "her wife Karen McCoy", question is how can you tell the difference. are they both wives or never mind.

Yup, never mind. Nothing to see here or comment on. Move along, move along.

Oh, look, the 'piscopal Bishop just had another stroke. He's foaming at the mouth and has bit his tongue off. Think we should administer last rites?

Move along, move along.

I love me some Brown Bess. Will you come to my gay wedding? Byron will be protesting outside.

What a "sick deal"! To destroy the minds & souls of children with this kind of "bunk" is the worst thing that could be produced by an educational system! No wonder why our kids are having all the problems in life noted by every MD in the country!

Typical Byron blubber. Tries to make his point, and then degrades into personal attacks.

Of course, being a charter school, they probably didn't miss a whole lot by being out of class. They also learned about civic law in California. Note the keyword- law.

It's just a matter of time, Byron George. You will be going to gay weddings in Texas within the decade. Roll over.

Roller, lol
As with other States, the will of the voters will be overturned by liberal judges.

"Keyword--law" What law? Goofy liberal judges. It is not law until it makes it to the SCOTUS.

BTW, what personal attack. If it is a question you cannot answer then let someone else do it.

Byron:

If the kids' parents are cool with it,and the school is cool with it, what is the problem here?

>>If the kids' parents are cool with it,and the school is cool with it, what is the problem here?

The problem as I see it is that the school chartered a bus (using tax payer funds) to a fellow school employee's private event, and billed it as an 'acedemic' field trip.

>>Of course if this same school allowed students to attend a traditional wedding as a field trip, then I don't see this as a problem.

I do. The school should not be shuttling the teacher's own students to the teacher's own wedding, regardless of same-sex or traditional.

For it to merit as an acedemic field trip (as a minimum) the school should have made it participatory of the entire school or entire school grade, not just that teacher's students.

Byron's previous personal attack:

"Leave them out of your sick fight" - Sick is a personal attack against gay people.

". BTW, I noticed in the article that it said "her wife Karen McCoy", question is how can you tell the difference. are they both wives or never mind." - This is merely an example of condescension which I myself enjoy on occasion because it's so much fun. I think is perfectly acceptable.

When my partner and I get married Byron, where can we send your invite?

michael a., just send it in care of the Dallas Blog. How will i know you? Will you be wearing the tux or the dress?

Better yet michael, just post the invitation here and more people can also join me at your "wedding."

We elect representatives and appoint judges to oversee our laws, Byron. Sorry, but you don't get to vote on every law that comes along. That's why we live in a republic and not a democracy. We realized long ago that mob rule was inefficient and dangerous.

written by Byron George , October 15, 2008

in other words, the will of the people does not mean one thing!

When anything is placed on the ballot as a Constitutional Amendment, is passed and then some judge decides he doesn't like it he/she should not be able to bypass the 'will of the people' That is what is happening.

Explain to me how a Constitutional Amendment which amends the Constitution can be considered unconstitutional. impossible

...
written by Holy Roller , October 15, 2008

There hasn't been a case that you're mentioning Byron. No marriage amendment has been overturned. The judicial branch has only noted that the current laws, in whatever states in question, are unconstitutional. So the only way to make them constitutional is to amend their constitution. That is what California is currently trying to do next month.
