The computer network of the World Bank Group – one of the largest repositories of sensitive data about the economies of every country – has been raided repeatedly by outsiders for more than a year, Fox News has discovered. According to fox News, “it is still not known how much information was stolen. But sources inside the bank confirm that servers in the institution’s highly-restricted treasury unit were deeply penetrated with spy software last April. Invaders also had full access to the rest of the bank’s network for nearly a month in June and July.” At least six major intrusions have occurred – two of them using the same group of IP addresses that originated from China – have been detected at the World Bank since the summer of 2007, with the most recent cyber-attack occurring just last month. The bank’s senior technology manager sent a frantic midnight e-mail and referred to the situation as an “unprecedented crisis.” Actually, it may be the worst security breach ever at a global financial institution. This has left bank officials scrambling to attempt to understand the nature of the year-long cyber-assault, while also trying to prevent the news from leaking to the public. The crisis comes amid an awkward moment for Robert Zoellick, the World Bank president, who runs the world’s largest and most influential anti-poverty agency that doles out $25 billion a year, and whose board represents 185 member countries. The bank holds its annual series of meetings in As reported by Fox News, “Zoellick is positioning himself and the bank as an institution that can help chart a new path toward global financial stability. But that reputation, more than ever, depends on the bank’s stable information infrastructure.” To read the entire article from Fox News, link here:

written by Boo , October 10, 2008 I took a look over the World Bank memo linked to in the Fox News article, and all I can say is haha. Nelson Nuntz style. A big, and very important part of corporate security is realizing that you are being target by many, many vectors and compartmentalizing everything. That way if there is breach it's self contained. This didn't happen here. CEOs take head. Your IT department is important. You never realize how important until something bad happens and you end up with egg on your face and a ton of reporters at your door. Write comment
