Mishaps Mark McCain’s Flying Career PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Oct 6, 2008, 03:50 PM

Three crashes early in McCain’s flying career led Navy officials to question or fault his judgment.

On an overcast Texas morning in 1960, John McCain was training in his AD-6 Skyraider when he slammed into Corpus Christi Bay and sheared the skin off his plane’s wings.

McCain recalled the incident decades later in his autobiography. He claimed the engine quit while he was practicing his landing. However, an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center discovered no evidence of engine failure.

Investigators concluded that the 23-year-old junior lieutenant wasn’t paying attention and mistakenly used a power setting to low to maintain level flight in a turn. This crash was one of three early in McCain’s aviation career in which his judgment and flying skills were questioned or faulted by Navy officials.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “in his most serious lapse, McCain was ‘clowning’ around in a Skyraider over southern Spain about December 1961 and flew into electrical wires, causing a blackout, according to McCain’s own account as well as those of naval officers and enlistees aboard the carrier Intrepid. In another incident in 1965, McCain crashed a T-2 trainer jet in Virginia.”

After McCain was sent to Vietnam, his jet was destroyed in an explosion on the deck of an aircraft carrier in 1967. He was shot down three months later during a bombing mission over Hanoi and taken prisoner. McCain was not faulted in either of those cases and was later praised for his heroism as a prisoner of war.

As a presidential candidate, Sen. McCain has cited his military service – specifically his 5 ½ years as a POW. Yet, he has been less than forthcoming about his mistakes in the cockpit.

Lesson learned. When he becomes president DO NOT let him fly Air Force 1.

There are old and bold pilots but there are not any old bold pilots. So eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you may bust your ass. I congratulate him for getting right on his hoss and riding again.

He was obviously able to land on a rolling and pitching carrier at night in bad weather or he wouldn't have been over Hanoi in the first place. That's one of the hardest things to do in flying an airplane.

He couldn't fly Air Force 1 anyway, as he can't reach above his shoulders.

I'm at a loss to understand the relevance of this story. I'm sure some of our lib friends can help me.

John McCain may have exercised poor judgment in his early twenties. Just like every other male in America. That all he did was crash a few air planes is better than many of us.

I don't get it either. I'm more concerned with continuing to let the social conservative right wing of the Republican party lead us, which judging from the Palin pick, seems to be a plausible fear.

Amy, Palin is not running for president. You have John McCain who has a proven record or Obama and even you can't tell me anything about him other than "change." Change to what?

Byron: I can't speak for Amy, but I can tell you a few things about Obama.

Barack Obama has laid out a tax plan that will help to reverse the massive discrepancy in wealth that has occurred over the past eight years. Over the past eight years the rich have gotten richer, and our middle class have been steadily losing ground. One only needs to look so far as the rising prices of gas and tuition, the decline of public school, and recent bank bail outs that allowed the bank executives to walk away with millions upon millions of dollars while the employees of the banks are left collecting unemployment scrambling with limited job prospects as a recession looms large on the horizon. I know Obama's opponents characterize this as a redistribution of wealth but this is untrue. This is restoring the balance of wealth in our nation. The deck has been stacked against our middle class for too long. Opponents of Obama have also claimed that Obama will raise you taxes. Well, if you make of 250k a year, yes. If you make less than 250k a year you will be receiving a tax cut. As for the claim that this will effect small business nation wide. Well, if your business is returning to you a profit of over 250k yes, you will pay more. Please note that is profit, not gross income but the net. If you are a small business owner making less than 250k profit and you are concerned about your taxes being raised here's some free advices. Get a new accountant.

Obama has also offered an actual plan to withdrawal from Iraq. No, it's not perfect but it is simplistic and it works. 18 months and we are out. If McCain has articulated a plan I haven't seen it. I have seen McCain's camp use phrases such as 'no waving the white flag of surrender' and make other attacks on Obama's plan, but if they have a plan of their own besides 'hang out and see if these political issues resolve themselves' I've missed it. McCain has also hammered home his support of the surge and how it worked(which it did), but no communications about what he would like to do long term in Iraq.

There is plenty more, but it's late and I'm tired.

Byron,
You dance with them what brung ya. And while Palin's a looker, she is NOT talented enough to assist or take over for the toughest job in the world.

Give me the McCain of 2000, and I would've voted red. I mean it. But this ticket? Blecch.

Bryon, you don't get it. The social conservative wing has RUINED your party and left you with zero credibility. Dating back to the Schaivo case to bashing illegal immigrants to gays in 2004, they have run on ideology rather than actual policy. Karl Rove would lead Palin around by her nose if McCain were to die. Don't worry though, we're about to have a regime change.

I would rather vote for a guy who flew a plane [McCain] and crashed, than to vote for a guy [Obama] who cannot fly............

Hey Boo,
On the recent bank bailout (which I am totally against) cannot be blamed on just one party. This problem started years ago and should have been stopped in it's tracks. Barney Frank was on the regulatory commission during the time he was having a homosexual affair with a Fannie employee. Both parties can take blame for the bailout.

Businesses do not pay taxes. If they do the owner is not a very good businessperson. Taxes are passed on to the consumer.

Obama's Iraqi plan of withdrawal in 18 months is great with me. I hope it can happen earlier. But, if I am a terrorist I will just sit back and wait 19 months to raise all kind of hell.

byx.
This is where we disagree. You don't think Palin is talented enough to be vp or president. That is one of my fears about Obama.

Amy,
Do you have children? I have a daughter and if I have an ex son-in-law that wants to pull the plug on my daughter I would fight just as her family did.

You have never heard me bash illegal immigrants, unless you call my complaining that they have broken the laws of the United States, bashing.

In fact, I have many times said they should be returned to their country and then if they want to come here legally, then come on down.

Never bashed gays. Totally believe their lifestyle is inappropriate and against God's Will. Yes

Obama (if he wins) may bring change. I hope we can live with his change.

wow.... lord byron tell me more about gods will since you seem to know that he does not approve of the gay life style …..does he approve of Mexicans?
its funny how we want to blame democrats for 14 years of republican control by saying that the liberal democrats held things up but that would be a first since they were not in charge. Democrats should love W he has done more to help the democrats than anyone else with the $4 gasoline, endless costly war, 700 gazillion bailout to friends in high places, opps the Russian are in south America,,,you don’t say?? he is the republican Jimmy Cater…..what tactic will you guys use to win this election, you played the gay card, terrorist card, illegal card, oh I know the race card but it wont work.

Manny s,
I have no problem with people from Mexico. I have a problem with lawbreakers. Coming into this country illegally is against the law. As I've said for a thousand times on this blog. Illegals, go home, get in line and come back legally.

GOD loves all people. Hates their sin.

If you read the Bible it is very easy to find God's Word on homosexuality. If you need, I will give you the verse. Read Leviticus 18:22 (any translation) and get back to me.

The rest of your post is laughable. Nice talking points though.
