A story in the NY Times also suggests that Brokaw had a hand in modifying the anchor duties of Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews on election and debate nights, moving them to analysts with Gregory as anchor. Their commentary clashed with the more traditional role Brokaw played on “NBC Nightly News” for more than two decades. Brokaw also has conducted some shuttle diplomacy with the John McCain campaign, which believed it was not getting a fair shake from NBC. The campaign was reluctant to accept an NBC debate moderator until Brokaw's name came up. Brokaw will moderate the second presidential debate next Tuesday in Nashville. Here's the Times story.

Former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw has stepped in with a steady hand to provide political guidance to the network since the death of Tim Russert and has managed to keep "Meet the Press" at the top of the Sunday morning chart. Between election day and early December, NBC News will decide how to proceed with "Meet," which Brokaw has been hosting on an interim basis. The network is leaning toward an ensemble of hosts that would include Chuck Todd, NBC's political director currently seen frequently on MSNBC, and David Gregory, a correspondent and NBC anchor.
