He was the first Russian to win the Van Cliburn Competition in 1973. Vladimir Viardo was born in the Caucasus Mountains near the Black Sea. He studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Naumov. After having received his doctorate, he became Lev Naumov’s assistant. He won two international competitions: the “Prix du Prince Rainier” at the Maguerite Long - Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris (1971) and the Van Cliburn Competition (1973).

His travel visa was withdrawn by the Russian Soviet authorities. It was not until the new era of “Glasnost” and “Perestroika” that he was again able to play abroad. He has performed at the Lincoln centre, the Kennedy Centre, Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw, and the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

Vladimir Viardo is presently Artist in Residence at the University of North Texas. He is founder of the Viardo Foundation which is committed to providing financial assistance to talented students.

He has made many recordings including Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, Cesar Franck, Alemdar Karamanov, Nikolai Medtner, Krzysztof Penderecki, Sergei Rachmaninoff.
