Biden: Wealthy Americans Would be Patriotic to Pay Higher Taxes PDF Print E-mail
by Carolyn Barta    Thu, Sep 18, 2008, 08:51 AM

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing wealthier Americans to do. The Republican campaign for president calls the tax increases their Democratic opponents propose "painful" instead of patriotic. Under the economic plan proposed by  presidential candidate Barack Obama, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of American taxpayers — would receive a tax cut. Biden said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that the plan would "take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people,"  according to this AP story.

I will give JB credit. That is a new spin on taxes.

Income redistribution. The government strong enough to give it to you is strong enough to take it away.

I'm not rich by any measure, but I don't want someone else's money. It's theirs, and I have no right to it unless I earn it honestly. What a novel attitude. And dangerous, because it means we don't need liberals to look out for us.

dt,

I find it refreshing to read that someone doesn't want other peoples' money. Probably the most dismaying part of the soak-it-to-the-rich commentary that erodes civility in our society is the level of malignance in so much of the commentary.

Having watched my brother struggle to become a neurologist after decades of back-breaking work, the notion that anyone "deserves" a cut of his paycheck is shocking/sickening to me. People who make substantial salaries don't have them handed to them, but one would never know that from the MSM.

The biggest disparity between the top quintile and the bottom is number of workers and hours worked. The difference is quite extraordinary.

Has Obama ever said how much he intends to raise taxes on what he calls the "rich?"

I ask this because I am wondering how he intends to balance the budget by soaking the "rich" and giving everyone else a break. I doubt if a 90% rate would do it within a hundred years, assuming his plan brings in more net money, which I doubt. Remember his comment that he recognized that a previous cut in the capital gains tax resulted in more money, but he wanted to raise it anyway out of "fairness?"

I believe he also said he would give a tax cut to 95% "of all Americans." Does this include the lowest quintile that pays no taxes? If so, is he talking a payment to these folks?

The numbers don't add up. I think we're seeing a gigantic vote purchase scheme here. I would welcome clarification from you libs out there, if you can restrain yourself from calling people names or questioning their intelligence.

DT:

The full plan is on his website for all to read. I suggest you do so.

In a short answer to your first question -- by not renewing the Bush tax cut for high income taxpayers.

Sen. Obama's numbers add up far better than Sen. McCain's. And you don't have to take my word for it. That's according to the nonpartisan Center for Tax Policy and the Concord Coalition.

I wonder whether Biden considers his utter lack of charitable giving "unpatrioic"?

What a freaking hypocrite.

And what about Obama's brother, who lives in a hut in Kenya while his brother Barack is a millionaire? I wonder why Barack is telling us we should pay more to help others when he is so unwilling to help his poor brother?

Freaking socialist hypocrites.

Antonio --

I believe the subject here was taxes, was it not?

And how in the world do you know Sen. Obama "is so unwilling to help his poor brother?" If you have first-personal knowledge of this preposterous claim, I'm sure there are lots of reporters out there who would love to see your evidence. I urge you to find one.

Instead of changing the tax laws why don't you democrats just send the IRS an additional 15-20%. I'm sure they will take it with no questions asked!

Would any democrats, on this blog and elsewhere, consider a flat tax with ABSOLUTELY NO deductions?

Hey kids,

You know another way to redistribute wealth? You deregulate an industry like say, the mortgage industry. Then your greedy self writes a lot of bad mortgages based on no downpayments and bad credit. You know these fools can't afford a mortgage but you don't care, you got Hummers to buy. So then, they are bundled up and sold as a 'investment'. Then they all go bad, you made your money on the front end and the taxpayer can just pick up the pieces with our tax money. So in conclusion, you got rich and the taxpayers picked up your tab. Nice.

"Would any democrats, on this blog and elsewhere, consider a flat tax with ABSOLUTELY NO deductions?"

No. Because it would RAISE the taxes for anyone not wealthy. You, too, can come to this conclusion by accepting facts over a reality-challened ideology.

If I read the tax code correctly, $0-$25,350 pays 15%. If everyone paid a flat 15% then the "not wealthy" would not be affected.

If you want to identify the myth of the tax cut only for the wealthy, take off your blindfold and pin the tail on the donkey.

what a bunch of stuff!!...This guy who thinks it is patriotic to pay taxes doesa not have a clue as to what is patriotic! Neither do the other so-called Robin Hoods like Hussain Obama, who want to take from the haves & give to the have-nots!

You guys had better look @ this guy! He has a lot of other social-engineering in mind that will scare you to death!!
