Polls: Palin Gaining in Popularity PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Sep 5, 2008, 05:00 PM

Most Americans had never heard of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin just a week ago. Now, following her Vice Presidential acceptance speech viewed by more than 40 million people, Palin is viewed favorably by 58% of American voters. The most recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 37% hold an unfavorable view of the self-described hockey mom.

According to Yahoo News, “the figures include 40% with a Very Favorable opinion of Palin and 18% with a Very Unfavorable view. Before her acceptance speech, Palin was viewed favorably by 52%. A week ago, 67% had never heard of her.”

The new data also reveals significant increases in the number who say McCain made the right choice and the number who say Palin is ready to be President. Overall, John McCain’s choice of Palin earns slightly better reviews than Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden.

In more stunning news, Palin’s favorable ratings are now a point higher than either man at the top of the Presidential tickets this year. As of Friday morning, McCain and Obama are each viewed favorably by 57% of voters, but Biden is viewed favorably by 48%.

When it comes to perceptions of Palin, there is a strong partisan gap. 89% of Republicans give her favorable reviews along with 33% of Democrats and 59% of voters not affiliated with either major party. She receives positive reviews from 52% of women and 65% of men.

As reported by Yahoo News, “51% of Americans believe that most reporters are trying to hurt Palin’s campaign, a fact that may enhance her own ratings.”

now the libs will tell you that polls have nothing to do with it, unless it is in their favor.

Byron:

Don't be ridiculous. Polls matter. Nobody has said they don't matter.

But remember, this is her high watermark. She has nowhere to go but down from here. And don't infer from my comments that she will crater, but her numbers will go down.

As long as she continues to run from an investigation, misrepresent her record and dodge the press, the bloom will fade from the rose.

Unless of course you are convinced she is the new worldly embodiment of Jesus Christ himself.

She has 80% approval rating in Alaska. she still has a ways to go before she peaks.
What are Bush and Cheney's ratings these days? How about the U.S. Congress?

HSH: I have to agree with your comments. Initially after Palin's comments at the RNC convention even CNN described her speech as powerful. Since then various commentators have asked more serious questions about troopergate, the bridge to nowhere, etc. Questions about how Wasilla is refereed to as the 'Meth capital of Alaska' by Alaskan police have yet to even be brought up. I expect they will though.

Polls matter. They matter a lot. Understanding how they work is even more important though. What's happening here is called a bump, or peak, or spike. As the vetting process goes on how the voters will respond to Sarah Palin is hard to predict. It's safe to assume that the polls will reflect this though.

On an unrelated note I'd like to request that the admin's of this site stop censoring my posts. Repeatedly I have had relevant, non-inflammatory posts be either partially or totally censored. Just because I bring a view contrary to yours to this site does not mean you should silence my voice.

She has revolutionized the women's eyeglass industry. $200-$300 a pop?

HSH,

Why do you assume this is her high water mark? There's no rational basis for saying that.

If she holds close to steady with all the BS you people are putting out, McCain has a real chance. If she gains, McCain wins.

Shall we count the ways the BO/Biden team has misinterpreted/lied about its record?

I thought not...if for no other reason than the list is too long to post in the space afforded.

So Palin is both wildly popular with the public AND a victim of the liberal media? Which is it?

...
written by Byron George , September 06, 2008

Actually Austin, both are correct. You see, America is getting fed up with the liberal media.

I find it interesting that NOW called her a man (simply because she is not liberal).

The democratic party is the party that claims they are for equal rights, pro choice, and want to see women get ahead in life. Here is a woman, who if were a democrat, the dnc would love but since she is a conservatist she must be evil. America is seeing thru the liberal smoke screen.

Is that why MSNBC is more popular than Fox now?

Can you imagine the conservative reaction if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant as a teenager and the Clintons welcomed the boy responsible into their family and showed him off the way the Palins are? The Republican reaction about "failed liberal values" and "typical Democratic immorality" would have been deafening.

But since this is a Republican family, well, it is a "private matter" that just shows their "prolife committment".

Talk about double standards.....

Doesn't believe in global warming... believes in a ban on abortion, even in the case or rape or incest... believes in no gun control at all... doesn't believe in evolution...

This lady is more right wing than Rush Limbaugh...

...
written by jb , September 07, 2008

So, Daniel et al find it repugnant to have a candidate who believes that an individual's right to life does not hinge on the circumstances of their conception........

Yeah...does it get any more "right wing" than thinking that life is precious?

In every study I have seen, women who were impregnated via rape but eschewed abortion recovered far better than those who destroyed their children. When interviewed, the women who gave birth said that they could never undo the horrible wrong of the rape.

No, abortion does NOTHING to wipe the slate clean.

Compounding it with the destruction of an innocent child would simply have made an unbearable situation worse. Virtually all of them said that the child was the one good thing that emerged from the horror. Most did not keep that child, resting in the sure knowledge that the child went to a loving home.

To me, Palin's position is so much deeper and encompassing than the facile knee-jerk "abort-em-if-they-were-conceived-in-rape.

Anyone who has held a mother in their arms following an abortion knows that abortion is cruel to the women who have them. Unless it is a clear case of saving the life of the mother, abortion hurts everyone.I have never figured out why so many wish this tragedy upon those they profess to care about.

Are we seeing a renaissance in conservative thoughts and values?

written by don , September 08, 2008

Sara Palin's sole use is as a giant distraction from any debate/examination on the critical issues of today.
As long as the media/public are focused on her "story" then they are not talking about taxes, healthcare, Iraq, the economy or any of the things that will show that McPalin is just an extension of the current republican crowd, the one's who are responsible for the financial sector meltdown, the Iraq war and its attendant rise in energy prices, and the complete collapse of the United States as a leader on the world stage.
