Detroit Mayor to Resign from Office PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Thu, Sep 4, 2008, 12:58 PM

Detroit mayor resigns.jpgMayor Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit pleaded guilty today to a pair of felony obstruction charges in a sex-and-misconduct scandal and will step down after months of defiantly holding onto his job leading the nation’s 11th largest city.

According to the Houston Chronicle, “the plea deal brings to an end a seven-months-long ordeal that led to felony charges against Kilpatrick and plunged the city, region and state into political chaos.”

The 38-year-old Democrat is to serve four months in jail and five years of probation as part of the deal. He also must pay $1 million in restitution over the five-year probationary period.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner asked the Detroit mayor if Kilpatrick understood he was giving the right to be innocent until proven guilty. Kilpatrick replied, “I gave that up a long time ago.”

As reported by the Chronicle, “the married mayor and former top aide Christine Beatty were charged in March with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice. They’re accused of lying under oath about an affair and their roles in the firing of a deputy police chief.”

Beatty refused to plead guilty and next will appear in court on Sept. 11. Ken Cockrel Jr., the city council president, will succeed Kilpatrick as mayor until a special election is held.

Radio says he must REPAY $1 Million. Where does he get that kind of money?

We will probably be hearing from Nobama today that this is not the Kwame Kilpatrick he has known and endorsed.

Detroit may be the 11th largest city -- but it is the poorest per capita. Guess that's what happens when you elect a "community organizer" to an executive position.

Detroit is so full of corruption and machine Democrats like Obama-buddy Kilpatrick. Throw in John Conyers' insane wife (a Detroit city council member) and it's easy to see why Detroit is such a pitiful s**thole.

Thank God we still believe in honesty and enterprise here in Dallas.
