George Clooney Chides Celebrity Obama-backers PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Aug 27, 2008, 06:20 PM

Clooney Obama.jpgHollywood actor, George Clooney has stayed away from the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Co. this week, which stands in sharp contrast to his politically-minded celebrities who have chosen to make an appearance to throw their support behind Sen. Barack Obama. Those stars include: Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon, Anne Hathaway and director Spike Lee.

According to the Daily Telegraph of London, Clooney, “the 47-year-old star is in Italy to present his latest movie, Burn after Reading, at the Venice Film Festival. But asked if he would have liked to attend the convention, Clooney replied, ‘I like watching conventions on television. I think the stars there should be the people who have been elected.’”

Nor did Clooney go overboard in his praise for Obama, noting that he was “optimistic” but also “worried” about what the future might hold.

As reported by the Telegraph, “this despite the fact that the avowedly liberal Clooney is said to be a big supporter of the senator. He was recently forced to deny acting as an unofficial adviser to the presidential hopeful.”

Perhaps, Clooney was wary about giving too much celebrity endorsement to the Illinois senator as he aims for the White House. Republican rival Sen. John McCain has ridiculed Obama’s Hollywood celebrity status, recently comparing him to Paris Hilton.
