Catholic Bishops Rebuke Biden and Pelosi PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, Aug 26, 2008, 05:23 PM

Abortion Biden.gifIrritated by pro-choice Democrats, who proudly proclaim their Catholicism, the Archbishop of Washington D.C. is castigating House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for misstating church history and the Archbishop of Denver is giving a warning to vice presidential hopeful Joe Biden not to take Communion.

According to Fox News, “the unusual public rebukes come as both Pelosi and Biden are talking up their faith in a bid for swing voters as Democrats stage their national convention in Denver. In an interview Sunday, Pelosi claimed to be an expert on the church’s abortion stance.”

Pelosi is quoted as saying to NBC’s Tom Brokaw, “as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue I have studied for a long time.” She then explained in her view when life begins, “and what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the Church have not been able to make that definition. And St. Augustine said at three months. We don’t know.”

Brokaw pointed out that the Catholic Church “feels very strongly” that life begins at conception, but Pelosi responded, “I understand. And this is like maybe 50 years or something like that. So again, over the history of the church, this is an issue of controversy.”

Meanwhile over the weekend, Biden’s pro-choice views raised the ire of Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput. The archbishop is quoted as saying, “I presume that his integrity will lead him to refrain from presenting himself for Communion, if he supports a false ‘right’ to abortion.

Chaput’s most notable quote is about Pelosi; saying she is “a gifted public servant of strong convictions and many professional skills. Regrettably, knowledge of Catholic history and teaching does not seem to be one of them.”

I wish the Bishop would have mentioned services for unwed mothers with children & the mortal sin of the death penalty.

Pelosi and Biden are really out of step with both traditional and current Church teaching. The fact that the Catholic Church has become more articulate on the matter in the last 50 years has more to do with the fact that it did not seem to be even a point of contention in the Christian world until the 60's than with a basic change in belief.

How refreshing: members of the USCCB with a congenital backbone. Thank you Archbishop Wuerl and Archbishop Chaput.

Have the same bishops rebuked Catholics Scalia, Thomas, Olito and Roberts over their support for the death penalty?

Maybe the archbishops should also comment on the conditions of poverty that have been fostered by John McCain and John Cornyn in opposition to Biblical teachings? http://acropolisreview.com/200...alues.html

The Bishop, or Bishops, speak correctly here. Separating secular politics from church doctrine, it is clear that if one professes to be a member of a church and to thus follow its doctrine and beliefs, it is to be expected that one will in fact follow that doctrine and set of beliefs. Catholics believe in the right to life, which incidentally was a belief shared by the Founding Fathers of the Amnerican government [remember : "We hold these truths to be self evident, ....... rights to life, liberty ....."]. If Mr. Biden or Mrs. Pelosi want to claim to be Catholic, then it is inconsistent for them to proclaim to follow a belief in abortion as a "right" ..... While these two people [Biden and Pelosi] may in fact be free in the secular world to take positions that are inconsistent with other positions they also claim to take [they are "free" to do this as a matter of secular expediency, but still it is not morally or ethically right for them to do so] that secular freedom does not mean that they cannot be, or should not be, held accountable in their faith lives for failing to follow the set of beliefs and doctrines that they have professed to accept in their religion.

What might those be, Sean?
Your website just gives us conclusions, not facts.

Be careful of the beam in your own eye (abortion). The verse in Acropolis might just apply to you.

And Grrrrrr, I've never understood how one can say that it's wrong to execute a mass murderer but ok to execute an unborn child. Your hypocrisy is staggering.

What about all the stuff the kennedys have committed (such as murder by teddy)with no mention from the Church?

Grr and Austin: God established the death penalty in his covenant with Noah. Believing His word is not a mortal sin.

We are the United States of America, NOT the United States of the Roman Catholic Church.

Thus far, the Catholic Church has never condemned the death penalty as a mortal sin, though the Catholic Catechism certainly makes the case that the need for the death penalty may be so rare as to not exist.

As a Catholic, I have not supported the death penalty.

Yet, having lived in the Middle East for decades, I began to question my position. It appeared that countries which carried out the death penalty swiftly were simply safer.

As I live in a crime-ridden area of Austin, I can only comment that the toll of lawlessness here is far higher than anyone will acknowledge.

Obviously, when the costs of an action outweigh the benefits, one will have less of the action [with the possible exception of crimes of passion]

Interestingly, one of Obama's advisors, constitutional lawyer, author, legal scholar, professor, Cass Sunstein, co-authored a fascinating research piece called "Life-Life Trade-offs." The paper explored the deterrent effects of the death penalty, and provided evidence that the death penalty actually saves lives within constraints. Great piece and certainly fodder for thought!

Tom - If you would just post a general link to foxnews.com at the beginning of every day, you'd achieve pretty much the same as your multiple daily posts to particular stories from that site.

And what's the deal with the animation on Joe Biden's picture? Freaky.

Pelosi may be suffering from Alzheimers or something. I am a Democrat and refuse to believe that she is that stupid.

Pilosi, Biden, Kennedy, Kerry and the otherCatholics with real power do what they want and the bishops generally go along. I don't get these bishops at all. Is there a testesterone cloud making its way around?

It's hard for the rich to get to Heaven. I forgot who said that.

JB, As a Cathollc I can support the death penalty because of several known cases where murderers have broken out of cutody and promptly killed two or more victims to belie the idea that it is unnecessary or that incarceration is safe and reliable. The families of the added victims would certainly disagree with that idea.
