Biden, 65, has twice run for the Democratic nomination for president, is Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as an orator and for speaking his mind. He's spent 30 years in the Senate. Known as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, he's also been chair of the Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over Supreme Court nominees. Speculation focused on Biden Friday night after some of the media discovered Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia had been told they were not the choice. Biden is 65 and was first elected to the Senate when he was 29. Here's the AP story. The pick elicited these reaction stories:
CNN appeared to be the first to break the story, around 1:20 a.m. The text message began going out about 3 a.m. Here's some of the CNN coverage. The text message said: Friend --

written by Austin , August 23, 2008 With the presidential AND vice presidential candidates being announced ahead of time is there any reason left to hold political conventions, much less watch them?

written by Grrr , August 23, 2008 As a Catholic I welcome Senator Biden to the ticket. I hope he will soften his heart to the unborn; voice his hatred to the sin of the death penalty; assist in feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, etc. What a great choice for VP--now on to victory!

written by Byron George , August 23, 2008 ‘I think he can be ready but right now, I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training,’” “I think that I stand by the statement. I would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off.” quotes of Joe Biden

written by Hiram , August 23, 2008 The fact Obama picked Biden gives validity to the thought that Obama has a Bubba problem. Biden is the choice Obama had to take since he cannot count on the true support from both Bill and Hillary Clinton in order to attract the blue collar progressive democrat vote. Biden is no Clinton so I see trouble looming towards November.

written by Happy GOP , August 23, 2008 Obama/Biden - Both are good at reading other people's words. Both get in trouble when they try to speak for themselves. Thank you, Democrats.

written by Jonathan Green , August 24, 2008 The more I read this blog, the more I come to understand the likes of Bryon George, GRR, Texas Ranger, they are insignigicant people who are not decision makers and built their reputation insulting others and talking bs about politicians who care less about the opinions of these insignificat wannabes! Bite off that!

written by Hiram , August 24, 2008 Obama's choice of Biden makes me wonder if Obama has a BUBBA problem he needs to tend to. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize Bill & Hillary Clinton are not going to there for Obama for the stretch run to November's election. Maybe Biden is the guy who can help bring back Bill & Hillary's blue collar white progressive democratic voters that will be crucial to Obama this November. That said, I think Obama has a big BUBBA problem. I understand Bill Clinton may be holding a bad grudge against Obama right now.

written by Amy in Austin , August 24, 2008 Curb the criticism, Jonathan. This is America and everyone deserves the right to speak out even if some perceive it to be plain talking points for a party or a passing political trend. BG and I agree on nothing, but I have no doubt that we both love our country from the bottom of hearts.

written by Byron George , August 24, 2008 Oh Jonathan, you are hurting my feelings. What did I say in my above post that made you so upset? The truth? Biden said those words, not me. Of course it is easier to attack me instead of explaining what Joe Biden meant by his comment. You obviously don't know me.
...
written by michael a. , August 24, 2008 Byron, he meant he wanted to be President since that was what he was doing when he said it. Wait till they drag up all the quotes from Mittey. There you will find just as many anti-McCain comments. If you are looking for pro-Obama comments, look to Huckabee. In any event, Biden is a knowledgeable pit bull that Democrats need for when the lofty high road is not an option because of sleazy Republicans like those that ran Bush's ad campaign and that now run McCain's. I was hoping for Biden or Hillary and I'm quite happy with Obama's choice. Biden will eat these Republican loons for breakfast.

written by maximus , August 24, 2008 Joe Biden? A long-time Washington insider with a larger-than-life ego. Be still my beating breast. I now see what "change we can believe is" really means...recycled politics as usual. Thanks, B. Hussein.

written by JWP , August 24, 2008 Jonathan Speaking of people who aren't decision makers and spend all there time insulting people, when are you going to get in the game. You have strong opinions and seem to believe you have all the answers. You have been particularly hard on John wiley Price. You have stated that he needs to be replaced. Why don't you try that? You seem to be interested in politics and doing good for the community. Jump in and run against him. Of course when you run people will ask you questions. You will hvae to go on record. Are you afaraid to put your ideas out there in public for all to see.? If not run for office. Other wise why don't you turn down the personal attacks on veryone who happens to disagree with you. Put up or shut up.

written by RelicMM , August 25, 2008 Grrr: As a Catholic, I would think you would be scandalized having a pro-choice Catholic (an oxymoron if ever there was one) run for office. Mentioning your religion only as a political tool to incur favor with the Catholic voting population is chicanery at its best.
...
written by michael a. , August 25, 2008 Relic: If anyone would know about mentioning religion to incur favor with the voting population, it would be Republicans. That's an behavior your ilk has been engaged in for decades. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Don't call me a racist now....
...
written by Byron George , August 25, 2008 Michael a., Here is an earlier quote from you. "Byron, he meant he wanted to be President since that was what he was doing when he said it." Are you saying it is ok to say anything (whether you mean it or not) to be elected? Please answer a direct question without the usual rhetoric of "wait till so and so does this or that." Biden either meant what he said about BHO or he was lying.
...
written by michael a. , August 25, 2008 Byron, a civics lesson for you. When people run against each other within the same party during a primary, they sometimes aren't nice to each other. In the Republican primary of 1980, Poppy Bush called Reagan's brand of economics "voodoo economics".
...
written by RelicMM , August 25, 2008 michael a.: I understand your comments, but you seem to think evangelical while I was referring to Catholics in name only. Practicing Catholics are not compatible with either.
...
written by Byron George , August 25, 2008 Michael a. One more thing. I could care less what Romney says about McCain. You see, I do not care for John McCain's positions on 50% of the issues. I will not be voting for John McCain in November because I am in love with him, I will be voting against BHO. I'm frustrated at the Republican party that JM is the best we could do. BTW, before you play the racist card, it is not about the color of his skin. I don't like his stance on abortion, gay marriages, socialized medicine, anti-military stance and many other issues. And finally I could never be for a candidate from either party that was hand picked by George Soros and MoveOn.org.
...
written by michael a. , August 25, 2008 Byron, I'm sorry you have to vote for your perception of the lesser of two evils in November. I for once do not have that affliction. I don't need to play any race card. You're fairly transparent. I hope you enjoyed the ascent of China at the Olympics. They spent 4 billion of our dollars on the affair. Probably just interest we pay on the loan. Maybe 4 bil. worth of plastic junk in our homes. In any event, you keep up your "issue" based voting while you ignore the real problems that threaten our way of life. I really hope you get Romney. Golden tablets, dark skinned Jews killing light skinned Jews throughout North America where Jesus walked, prophets of polygamy. You just think you don't like McCain. I'll think of you on election day.
...
written by Byron George , August 25, 2008 Transparent, you don't know me. Just because I am totally against BHO does not make me a racist. I am about sick of your rhetoric about me being a racist. You do not know me, you don't even know my nationality. I love this country as much as anyone else. Because we disagree does not make me any less patriotic than you. I do have opinions. I am a conservative. And am not one bit ashamed of that fact. You act as if we never conducted business in China before GWB. Get real. If this country is SOOOO bad, why is JM and BHO virtually in a dead heat. You should find this fact very disturbing. A USA/Gallup poll taken last Thursday through Saturday found that only 47 percent of Clinton’s primary supporters say they will definitely vote for Obama while 23 percent were still uncommitted. I know you don't like polls (unless they are in your favor) but you better believe the politicians look at them.
...
written by michael a. , August 25, 2008 Byron, Please go find where I addressed you as a racist. I'll wait.
...
written by Byron George , August 25, 2008 "I don't need to play any race card. You're fairly transparent." If that is not accusing me of racism, please explain.
...
written by michael a. , August 25, 2008 I don't play race cards and you are fairly transparent. You are drawing conclusions. I am saying you are transparent and I don't play race cards. "BTW, before you play the racist card, it is not about the color of his skin. " You brought up race Byron, not I.

written by Hiram , August 26, 2008 JWP, Jonathan does not the (cojones) balls, (dinero) money or (ayuda voluntario) volunteer assistance to run a campaign against John Wiley Price. If that happens, Commissioner Price would have ten dollars for very one dollar Jonathan gets donated to his campaign and Jonathan would have one campaign volunteer for every 10 campaign volunteers Commissioner Price will have for his campaign. Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice-presidential runningmate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues. Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen
