'Chicken Lupe' Misleading PDF Print E-mail
by Carolyn Barta    Thu, Aug 21, 2008, 09:46 PM

lupe_valdez.jpgA video posted called "Chicken Lupe" on the the Dallas County Republican Web site, www.dallasgop.org (click on Media), shows a person dressed in a chicken suit in front of a Lupe Valdez for Sheriff event with a sign that says, "Lupe -- Why Won't you Debate."  It's accompanied by appropriate chicken clucking.  The only problem is: Valdez has agreed to debate. Her campaign says she's agreed to four public forums with her GOP opponent, Lowell Cannaday.

The joint forums include:

  • Stemmons Corridor Business Association: Tuesday, Sept. 16, noon. Holiday Inn Select at Love Field, 3300 W. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas.
  • League of Women Voters: Tuesday, Oct. 7, 7 p.m., Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, 9200 Inwood, Dallas
  • Duncanville Chamber of Commerce: Wednesday, Oct. 8, 11:30 a.m., 800 N. Main St. in Duncanville.
  • Dallas Bar Association: Wednesday, Oct. 15, noon, Belo Mansion, 2101 Ross, Dallas.

The Valdez campaign issued a press release attacking the Republican party and the Cannaday campaign for the YouTube video.  Kirk McPike, campaign manager for Sheriff Valdez, a Democrat, called the video a "desperate and dishonest stunt."

When was the agreement made? Before or after the video came out? How long did it take her to agree?
Who cares what Kirk McPike thinks?

One revealing thing about the video, as you will see if you watch it, is the fact that apparently democrats don't believe in free speech if it makes fun of them. Signs comparing the President of the United States to Hitler are apparently ok, but a sign asking Lupe why she won't debate is not.

Gangy, you might be interested to know that McPike's press release was the first time the dems would agree in writing to do the debates. At least the video got her to commit publicly. I'm sure McPike will deny that, too, but I trust my source much more than I do him.

Those times were made prior to the chicken suit incident. You don't set up times and dates for debates in one day. Use your head.

As for free speech, the event was a fundraiser. Not a public forum for debate or protests. They had every right to remove the chicken, just as Bush has removed protestors from his events. The chicken had his 15 minutes of fame.

Yes you can, if both parties want to do it and you know who to call. I've seen it done. Before the chicken was aired Lupe would not commit in writing to the debates. Therefore, until then, they were tentative by definition. Use your own head, if you can get it out, and cut out the elitist tone, you racist.

When has Bush removed protesters? Tell me, if you can. Maybe the cops did, but there is no evidence it was done at Bush's behest. Besides, the chicken wasn't removed, only technically assaulted, and not by the cops. A sidewalk is a public place and he had every right to be there.

Oh, and Gangy, how about Lupe's lie about when the Discovery Channel special would air? Unless, of course, she and her spokesperson are on different pages.

George Bush vetted his audiences during the entire 2004 election cycle. No one but supporters were allowed to those events and any dissent was screened and removed. The supporters were given tickets, no one without a ticket was allowed in.

Holly Roller; the new right wing strategy du jour is to accuse people like Obama and Valdez and their supporters of being racist. This is a crack up. I love to see the little Republican minions taking their talking points and using them in a sentence. "You elitist racist" lol.

And what's wrong with being an elitist?

the elite — a select group of people with outstanding personal abilities, intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes.

Lordy please don't give us any of that! We prefer our leaders dumber than dirt. Somebody you'd wanna have a beer with while they ruin your country cause they got none of that specialized training, intellect, skills or attributes. Can't have that running the greatest nation in the world, no siree.

Lupe has a long history of not agreeing to debates or forums unless she is given the questions in advance. This is not new. Maybe she agreed to some sort of forum or debate, but Ill be there were plenty of stipulations on it, and the questions had to be given in advance. Thats not a true representation of what you know about your job if you get to have the entire command staff answer the quesions before the debate....

I am a GOP voter for my whole life in Dallas County and I find this ad stupid and juvenile. This is the type of thing I expect from the Dems, not from the Republicans. This is crap Mr. Neerman, and so are you.

It would save time if Lupe was given the questions in advance and could submit them to staff who could answer them and then write the answers down.

Lupe would also need someone to tell her which answer to read if the questioner pulled a fast one and failed to ask the questions in the same sequence.

Canaday, on the other hand, should be given the same questions as Lupe, but asked totally different questions, preferably about string theory.

This would insure a fair debate, which Lupe could lose with dignity.
