Hallmark Starts Selling Same-Sex Wedding Cards PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Thu, Aug 21, 2008, 04:48 PM

Cards same-sex.jpgMost states don’t recognize same-sex marriage, but Hallmark does now. The largest greeting card company in the United States is rolling out same-sex wedding cards – featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. One says, “Two hearts, One promise.”

Fox News reports that, “Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.”

The language within the cards is neutral that doesn’t mention wedding or marriage, which makes them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark denies succumbing to any political pressure, but is responding to growing consumer demand.

American Greetings Corp., Hallmark’s largest competitor, doesn’t plan to enter the market, claiming its current offerings are general enough to address a lot of different relationships.

According to Fox News, “Hallmark started offering “coming out” cards last year, and the four designs of same-sex marriage cards are being gradually released this summer and will be widely available by next year. No sales figures were available yet.”

The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law estimates that since 1997 more than 85,000 same-sex couples in the United States have entered into a legal relationship from the moment when Hawaii started offering some legal benefits to same-sex partners.

During the next three years, it’s estimated that nearly 120,000 more same-sex couples will marry in California.

Thanks anyway FX.

Could these new cards be considered cue cards?

hey is this one of those "market driven" ideas? I think that is one of those Republican things they love, isn't it? You right wingers should be happy that Hallmark can make some money off of this.
