McCain Not Sure How Many Houses PDF Print E-mail
by Carolyn Barta    Thu, Aug 21, 2008, 11:41 AM

Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year, Republican presidential candidate John McCain acknowledged that he wasn't sure how many houses he and his wealthy wife actually own.  I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain responded to a question posed by Politico."It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."  Later, the McCain campaign told Politico that McCain and his wife, Cindy, have at least four in three states, Arizona, California and Virginia. Newsweek recently estimated the two owned at least seven properties.  AP picked up the story, published on Yahoo. Here it is from politico.com.

Well, at least he doesn't talk about Two Americas.

It sure is nice to know who the real elitist is.

Yeah, he's connected to the average voters--you know, the ones who are having trouble paying their mortgages. I'll bet each of YOU knows how many houses you own.

Well, however many houses, at least McCain and Cindy paid for theirs themselves.

I'm curious why it was important to Republicans that John Kerry and his heiress wife had 5 houses during our last election but John McCain and his heiress wife's homes are irrelevant?

Sounds pretty similar to me except that it looks like Theresa is getting much more for her money than Cindy... ascetically at least.

From Matthew Yglesias:

I’ve seen a lot of liberals giving John McCain a hard time about not knowing how many homes he owns. But this is a genuinely difficult question to answer! There’s the case of his two-for-one condo in Phoenix, for example. And there’s also the tricky question of McCain “Hidden Valley Ranch” house situation. The Cindy Hensley McCain Family Trust owns 11455 E Hidden Valley Road, 11445 E Hidden Valley Road, 11415 E Hidden Valley Road, and 11405 E Hidden Valley Road. But is that four properties or is it one property? What’s more, according to McCain there are six houses on the property. So that ranch situation could be anywhere from six houses to one house, depending on how you look at it. Combined with the condo situation, we’re now in the 2-7 house range.

UPDATE: And of course you have to consider the case of Meghan McCain’s loft in Phoenix. Her parents paid $700,000 for it and as a graduation present let her live there, but technically they’re the owners. Does that count as one of McCain’s houses or doesn’t it?

I know what you mean Randye, too bad McCain doesn't have friends like Tony Rezko -

Newsweek is now reporting that the McCains failed to pay the property taxes on their San Diego beachfront condo for at least the last 4 years. According to the story, they paid up yesterday, after news reports were published. If you forget what houses you own, I guess it's easy to forget to the pay the taxes on them for 4 years. Just like the average voter.

McCain has more than his fair share of Rezkos. He has Stephen Payne, Jack Abramoff, Charlie Black (Abramoff and Black did lobbying deals together for a murderous butcher named Jonas Savimbi.)

And then there are mega lobbyists like Vicki Iseman, Wayne Berman, Tom Loeffler, and his chief attack dog and liar Rick Davis all who advise or work for his campaign.

Plus 59 big time lobbyists who fund his campaign.

McCain says he is a reformer who will reduce the influence of lobbyists in Washington. So why are so many of these fat cats working to get him elected?

I guess you aren't aware of Obamas ties to lobbyists, Libby. Here, let me help you out -

Ther's plenty more, just google Obama lobbyist. So tell us Libby, why are these fat cats working so hard to get Obama elected?

This is so hilarious. I guess now, the only suitable candidate for president is one who defaults on their mortgage and has no health insurance. Only THEN can they relate to those who are struggling. Of course, it will help if they are uneducated, have kids outside of marriage, and have a history of impulsive behavior....

What a crock!

Here's a response from the McCain folks:

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said Thursday.

The myth about obama being just one of the folks is just that...a myth..........

Let's see: one house (Obama) versus who knows how many houses (actually 7--McCain); pays his real estate taxes on time (Obama) versus doesn't pay for 4 years until a magazine discovers it (McCain). Which one is more like you?

Now we are down to some really important issues.

And according to John McCain's definition, that still qualifies Obama as 'middle class' Ha!

Oops--correction alert. McCain does NOT own 7 houses. The actual count (as of 7 p.m. August 21) is 8. Further updates as warranted. Oh, and by the way, Mother Teresa did not (as originally reported) ask, request, or urge the McCains to adopt their daughter from her orphanage. In fact, the McCains had never met or spoken with Mother Teresa when they went to her orphanage and brought their daughter home. That was quite commendable. Why embellish it with a Mother Teresa anecdote, only to retract it when later challenged?

Let's get the record straight here. I mean the record according to the facts and not spin by the likes of Rush, Laura, Sean, Billo and Mike.

McCain said he was a reformer who would diminish the influence of lobbyists in Washington and yet he has 59 lobbyists who support his campaign. His chief campaign person, until he had to resign in disgrace was Charlie Black. And now it's attack dog super lobbyist Rick Davis.

McCain said Obama is a latte sipping elitist while he can't even count how many houses he owns and says one has to have $5. mil. to be rich. I guess Obama must be poor b/c he only earned $4 mil last year thanks to his book sales, and those who make under $250K must economically disadvantaged. Anyone under that salary has to be homeless in McCain world.

McCain said he supports a military draft in NM yesterday but had to dispatch his surrogates to cover up his truth telling. He thought he could get away with a little spinning b/c he failed to realize the media and folks present were recording him.

McCain is so out of touch with the economy, the war in Iraq and today's technology that one has to wonder what he is in touch with. Aside from, disinformation, losing wars, carnage and mayhem.

Hey Libby,

I tbink Warren's question was "How much money does one need to make to be rich?" Obama said $150 thousand and under was middle class and $250 thousand and over was rich. McCain said you have to MAKE $5 mil!!! Oh yeah. Under $5 mil must have a hard time making ends meet in this economy.

Another way you can tell you've won an argument with a liberal is when they start bringing up Limbaugh and Hannity.

Libby Shaw is doing everything he can to divert your attention away from Obamas hypocrisy on lobbyists. Like i said before, just google "Obama lobbyist" and you'll find plenty of information.

Libby is also lying about McCain saying he wants a draft, here's the truth -

http://tinyurl.com/5lpsof

As for the rest of Libbys nonsense, McCain supported the surge in Iraq which worked. If we had left Iraq two years ago when Obama wanted to, Iraq would now be controlled by Americas enemies. And Obama has convicted felons help buy his houses, here's the link about Obama and convicted felon Tony Rezko is case anybody missed it earlier -

From USA Today:

McCain, who has portrayed Obama as an elitist, is the son and grandson of admirals. The Associated Press estimates his wife, a beer heiress, is worth $100 million. Obama was raised by a single mother who relied at times on food stamps, and went to top schools on scholarships and loans. His income has increased from book sales since he spoke at the 2004 Democratic convention.

OK let's talk about tax cuts. Republicans run around like a bunch of chicken littles screaming "Obama is going to raise our taxes." Yes, he is going to raise the taxes of those who reside in the upper 1 and 2% of income earners. Most everyone else gets a cut. There is hard data to support this but no one will bother to read it in the GOP b/c I guess most would rather be spoon fed misinformation by political hacks with agendas that have nothing to do with everyday Americans.

When W. first proposed the extraordinary tax cuts, during wartime, mind you, McCain was outraged that middle America would have to bear the brunt of paying our federal taxes. He knew trickle down economics wouldn't work. It did not work under Reagan and it hasn't worked under W. The profits are either going to CEO's, shipped to offshore banks, or used to creat jobs overseas.

Now just a few years later W. is joined at the hip with W.'s tax cuts for the wealthy and obvious belief in trickle down economics.

During the interview with Pastor Warren, John McCain also said it didn't matter whether one is rich or not b/c he would not increase anyone's taxes. This is not true.

McCain's health care plan which will limit the deductibility of employer-paid insurance premiums, would actually raise taxes for a number of people.

The McCain campaign must be absolutely desperate, too, to try to smear Obama with something Ayers did when Obama was six years old. McCain used to play on a much higher ground than this. Too bad he hired Rove's minions to run his campaign.

If one wants to be accurately informed about Obama and McCain's tax cuts the hard data was published this month by The Washington Post.

Excerpt:

According to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are both proposing tax plans that would result in cuts for most American families. Obama's plan gives the biggest cuts to those who make the least, while McCain would give the largest cuts to the very wealthy. For the approximately 147,000 families that make up the top 0.1 percent of the income scale, the difference between the two plans is stark. While McCain offers a $269,364 tax cut, Obama would raise their taxes, on average, by $701,885 - a difference of nearly $1 million.

There is a table in the link below.
