Reacting to Pelosi's remarks, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the speaker should call the House of Representatives back from its summer recess immediately if she is sincere about a vote on off-shore drilling, CNN reports. Meanwhile. Cindy Sheehan, known for her anti-war vigils outside the Bush ranch in Crawford, has qualified as an independent candidate to challenge Pelosi for her California congressional seat. Sheehan says Pelosi failed to persuade her party to end funding for the Iraq war and hasn't held the administration accountable for its warrantless wiretapping program, according to the Associated Press.

written by Jim , August 12, 2008 The Republican plan has always included more than just drilling, thats what has been said all along. She refused all along until now and she is running scared. She is feeling the heat now and I guess she realizes that the American people are fed up. Thats why Obama has changed yet another position to agree to drilling. Must be nice to be a Democrat and have no accountability.

written by Amy in Austin , August 12, 2008 Would someone please locate a more INEFFECTIVE Speaker? The Democrats will do what they do best in this situation: cower and accept blame. If it weren't for my value system, I'd be a Republican.

written by randye , August 13, 2008 The key. of course. is "if it were part of a larger energy package". Pelosi and the Dems will offer some watered down over-regulated nothing on drilling, them pork up on alternatives with plenty of sops to their enviro masters. means nothing.

written by michael a. , August 13, 2008 I saw Speaker Pelosi on both the View and George Stephanopolis, and what she said in both of those places was consistent with what I read here. She would allow a vote on off shore drilling if it was part of a larger energy policy including greater CAFE standards for fuel efficiency. She didn't want to play to Republicans happy shiny answer to the American people that all they have to do is drill off shore and all their problems will be solved and they can keep burning oil like there's no tomorrow. Off shore drilling would account for maybe 1% to 2% of the world market and that's how much that oil would effect prices at the pump - in 8 years- 1% to 2% .... big whoop dee doo . Vote Republican - simple answers to complex problems that solve nothing but you just feel so much better. And note to Jim, Republicans have had zero energy policy for 8 years except to bend over and smile for the oil companies. Only McCain has actually said he would embrace alternate renewable fuels, greater fuel efficiency etc. because he knows he can't win without acknowledging the planet is heating up due to greenhouse gases. Bush and Cheney have done nothing but kick the problem down the road to make money for their buddies at our expense.

written by Jim , August 13, 2008 We havent had a price issue the last 8 years. Not much has had to be done. The leftist "sky is falling global warming" BS is exactly that... BS, so what kindof policy would one need? Oil was cheap and so was the gas made from it, now its not. So, now the Republicans want to do something and the left does not... whats new?

written by Byron George , August 13, 2008 The American consumer is not buying what the democrats have to sell. We drill for more oil, the supply goes up. Supply goes up, price comes down. Just the threat of us drilling has brought the price down. You whiny libs can cry all you want about drilling will not help solve the problem, but Americans know better. So does your leaders. Why else do you think they are caving in.

written by Steve Heath , August 13, 2008 Pelosi is one scary lady, as are most of the U.S congress - whether it be due to their corruption, ignorance or their adherence to politics over principle. They simply react to crises which are for the most part of their own making. For the most part, they live in their own fantasy world which is completely separated from reality. Many are outright deceitful liars, but many others have the amazing capacity to rationalize and believe their own lies when they vote on legislation that supposedly serves the interest of Americans. Unfortunately too many Americans live in the same fantasy world, which is reinforced by by an irresponsible media that serves the ruling elite and who really don't give a damn about the average American. I'm not part of that ruling elite and I'm sick and tired of them running this country into the ground to enhance their own power and influence. Both political parties serve their interests -almost equally - despite the empty rhetoric we hear from all of them. I know the elites and other special interests have always exerted disproportionate power and influence throughout American History, but but it seems it's really gotten much worse over the last couple of decades. I don't generally agree with Cindy Sheehan's liberal politics, but at least she is an honest, decent American who has integrity and conviction. She is certainly right on about politics in recognizing that politicians from both parties talk out of both sides of their mouth, telling their gullible constituents what they want to hear, while doing nothing to better the general good of the American public. People of all political persuasions like Ralph Nader, Ron Paul and now the very vocal jesse Ventura are preaching this message and getting quite a following of people who are likely to be very active in politics - not the couch potato type who are happy and content as long as they get cheap big screen TV's from China, American Idol and beer on Sunday's while watching football. Don't get me wrong. I love cheap consumer goods, football and an occasional beer or two. I just wonder how long the party will last. At least Cindy Sheehan had the integrity to abandon her Party (the democrats) when she figured out they were no better than Republicans on the war and other issues important to her. I have to admire her honesty and conviction. I hope the voters of San franciso can put principle above politics and give her a decent showing in the November election against Pelosi. As for republicans, the war went bad, so so they all diverted us on Neocon talk radio talking about immigration. A little late for that I would say. The damage has allready been done -and it looks like they'll do nothing anyway. Now we move on to another diversion, and we're all focused on the Energy crisis - again. Better late than never, I suppose, but there will be severe consequences a lot of pain and suffering to endure for doing nothing - even if we do resolve this mess. I doubt i will watch 10 minutes of either convention coming up. I've never watched American Idol, but I could probably find it more tolerable then listening to a bunch of politicians spouting their hot air on national TV. I do look forward to watching the Utube videos of jesse ventura and Ron Paul at his big 2 day rally in Minneapolis accross the street from the GOP Convention.

written by Ken Dickson This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , August 13, 2008 the Speaker is the biggest lier in D. C.!..She knows that we have the resources, domestically, if she & her crowd would just get out of the way!! World oil prices will fall if we add 50-100 additional rigs & develop what we have...show me one enviro who has been to ANWR & I will by you a cheeseburger! Drill here, Drill now, Pay Less! Pelosi couldn't get to D. C. without the energy available!..Nothing is wrong developing alternative sources, but it will take years getting that in the pipeline either! Sounds like America from all sides need to "pull together" Perish the thought!

written by michael a. , August 13, 2008 Jim: The price of oil per barrel when President Clinton left office was about $30 a barrel and yesterday it was about $113, you do the math. It has risen steadily since W. and his oil buddies rode into Washington. A look at any flow chart going back to the 70's would show the price of oil moderately rising from the end of the OPEC/Carter period through 2000 when W. took office, then it took off like a rocket. If the oil companies need more places to drill, why don't they use the approximately 40% of unexplored leases in the contiguous US that they whined about to acquire already? And yes Byron, the American public has shown their proclivity for overeating junk food for some time now. Big Macs, big cars, big houses, big asses, big box Walmart stores; all for cheap. Feel good carbs that are all filling with no nutritional value that you crash from after you eat too much. The stomach ache is here. Bush's presidency is gonna feel like eating several sacks full of donuts...get ready.

written by Byron George , August 13, 2008 Michael a., do you have any original thoughts? You sound like the "talking point" for the democratic party. You seem to be in the crowd of bash America or everything is America's fault. Did you ever think about changing countries? If I despised this country as much as you seem, I do believe I would move. Just because an oil company leases property does not mean their is oil there. The oil companies KNOW their is oil in ANWAR. Why are you so against drilling there? One more thing! Do a little research and see who makes the most off a gallon of gasoline--the oil company (who explores, develops, refines and distributes) or the federal government who does nothing (other than tax) to get it.

written by Holy Roller , August 13, 2008 The Coming Economic Collapse: How You Can Thrive When Oil Costs $200 a Barrel, by Stephen Leeb. Read it, short sighted drilling folks. You might learn something.

written by michael a. , August 13, 2008 Oh Byron. I gave you facts and figures, not talking points. You gave me talking points. You are a walking talking point. Drill in ANWAR with nothing to back it up but "The oil companies know...". The Europeans have taxed gas more than we have for decades so they never dismantled their trains and they have appropriate sized automobiles. As a result, they are handling this much better. An aside; their gas has only doubled while ours has quintupled due to W.'s mismanagement of the dollar. And I don't hate my country. I just refuse to cede it to puritanical, partisan, sanctimonious, ideologues.

written by michael a. , August 13, 2008 Vive la France. I guess I could if your dude hadn't ruined our currency. I think I'll stay and fight instead.
...
written by Jim , August 13, 2008 Mr. Michael A., You are right, it has gone up since W has been in office but no JUST because he is in office. Alot of things have happened in the world to affect the price since then. The explosion of growth and demand in China as well as the GWOT have all played a role in this. One thing that you Dems never want to do is compare the price in November of 2006 to now. after two years of Democratic control.
...
written by GS , August 13, 2008 Michael a What has ruined our currency is $700 Billion a year in imported oil. We have the oil we need, but haven't been allowed to drill for it. the only reason it will take 10 years to get it is the enviornmentalists will fight drilling in the courts for 10 years.
...
written by Amy in Austin , August 13, 2008 Actually, guys, the deficit has ruined our currency. We have a deficit because we invaded the wrong country. Byron, since you're so CERTAIN the America will always be THE GREAT, maybe you should research the Boer War and how it eventually led to Britain's decline.
...
written by michael a. , August 13, 2008 GS: What has ruined our currency are the tax cuts in 2000 coupled with no corresponding expenditure cuts. Add the Iraq War on top of that and you get our deficit and our currency problems. Amy is right. That and every time the Fed lowers interest rates is what has ruined our currency. Hey GS, what kind of car of car do you drive and are you willing to kill off one of God's creatures for your right to drive it? Even if you are, there is not enough oil in America for our consumption habits.... period. There never has been, that's why we keep sticking our noses in the Middle East. Maybe if we'd been leading instead of being greedy, China and India would be copying our good behavior rather than our bad.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reversed her opposition to a vote on offshore drilling on "Larry King Live" on Monday night, saying she would consider a vote if it were part of a larger energy package. Pelosi and fellow House Democrats have opposed Republicans' request for a vote on the drilling. Some Republicans stayed in chambers after Congress adjourned for the session, making speeches on energy policies, in an attempt to get Democrats to come back for a vote.
