New Fast-Food Outlets Banned from South L.A. PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Jul 30, 2008, 01:09 PM

McDondalds.jpgCouncilwoman Jan Perry is aiming to attract restaurants serving healthier meals to South L.A. by proposing a one-year moratorium on new fast-food outlets. A study found 30 percent of children living in the area are obese.

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved the measure despite complaints from representatives of McDonald’s Carl’s Jr. and other companies, who claimed they were being unfairly targeted.

The Los Angeles Times reports that, “councilwoman Jan Perry, who has pushed for a moratorium for six years, said the initiative would give the city time to craft measure to lure sit-down restaurants serving healthier food to a part of the city that desperately wants more of them.”

The ban last for one with possible two six-month extensions, covering a 32-square-mile area.

The law technically defines fast-food restaurants as: “any establishment which dispenses food for consumption on-or-off the premises, and which has the following characteristics: a limited menu, items prepared in advance or prepared or heated quickly, no table orders and food served in disposable wrapping or containers.”

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released a report last year revealing that 30 percent of children in South L.A. were obese, compared with 25 percent of all children in the city.

Why don't they give people ovens, stoves and fridges and force them to cook their own darn food. Good grief, people can't even be trusted to choose thier own meals?

Why can't I just eat my 2000 calorie happy meal in peace?

They have healthy food at fast food places. If people don't want to buy it, then so be it.

Now you're just going to force people to drive further, rather than walk and actually get some exercise, on their way to McDonalds.

That's the spirit: Don't dare discipline children. Just ban everthing that tempts them. You would think that would really get legislators in deep trouble.
