The Wall Street Journal published a front-page article July 17 (last Thursday) credited electric utility deregulation with Texas's high electricity prices. A link to the article is posted below, though one has to be a Wall Street Journal subscriber to access the article. The Association of Electric Companies of Texas has issued a response to many of the key points the WSJ article, which we post here. Basically, AECT argues that the Texas electric choice law has led to innovation and that Texas rates are lower than other natural gas-dependent states.

written by Holy Roller , July 24, 2008 We're not lower than other states. Also if you look at how much the increase in price of natural gas has been since deregulation, it is in no way proportionate to the increase in electric rates. You can ask companies who opted not to take part in deregulation, like Coserv, and they agree it isn't worth it.

written by Sharon , July 24, 2008 The writer for the Wall St. Journal forgot to mention that the main co-author of Texas' "Your Rates Will Be Cheaper!" Electric Deregulation Legislation (former State Senator David Sibley of Waco) is now a lobbyist for electric companies in Austin. His number is 512-477-4546 if you want to call and thank him for the cheap rates.

written by David W. Gilbreath , July 25, 2008 Most electric co-ops like CoServ chose not to enter into deregulation because they did not want to face competetion in their service area.

written by Farinata X , July 26, 2008 Ken Dickson doesn't seem to know that electric deregulation was brought to us by conservative free market fundamentalists in cahoots with the Bush Crime Family. Gee, Ken. Get a clue.

written by oliviaharis , August 21, 2008 Electric deregulation began in Texas January 1, 2002, as a result of Texas Senate Bill 7, which enabled the State of Texas to restructure its electric utility industry. Customers now are able to "shop" for electricity from a variety of companies, called “retail energy providers” (REP’s), just as they would shop for groceries, automobiles or apparel. The electricity still flows across the same poles and wires and the existing electric utility in the area still maintains them. ----------------- oliviaharis Write comment
