The Texas Legend is an award bestowed on an individual, company or organization in Texas whose vision, leadership and influence have had an enduring effect on the technology industry.
A Tarrant County District judge has ruled that Democrat Wendy Davis is eligible to run for the Texas Senate. The Texas Democratic Party immediately issued a statement calling on Sen. Kim Brimer (R-Arlington) to drop the legal action. (Brimer is challenging whether Wendy Davis properly resigned her Fort Worth city council seat, as required by the Texas constitution.)
"Today’s District Court ruling is a victory for the voters of Senate District 10," said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie. "It’s time for Senator Brimer to quit his legal shenanigans, face Wendy Davis, and let the voters choose their next Senator. The people of SD 10 deserve leadership from their elected officials, but Senator Brimer has tried almost every trick in the book to deny the voters a choice. Senator Brimer’s career has been marked by plenty of shady schemes already, and now it’s time for him to stop cowering behind his attorneys and start debating the issues that matter to Tarrant County voters."
One of Brimer's lawyers is quoted in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's website predicting an appeal.
"In our opinion, the facts in today's court case confirm that Ms Davis conspired to break Texas constitutional requirements for state legislative candidate eligibility," said Brimer campaign spokesman Jarod Cox. "That Davis purposely ran for Fort Worth city council in May of 2007 with no intention of serving her full term which overlaps the start of the State Senate legislative term she was seeking. She resigned four months later hoping to use her city council position, her lucrative city council salary, and city taxpayer money to fund her state senate campaign for 5 months before her replacement would be sworn into office. This is exactly what the kind of public office abuse that the framers of the Texas State Constitution wanted to prohibit."
Davis has issued a statement praising the court's ruling and has sent a letter to Brimer challenging him to a series of debates.
