City of Chicago to Buy Guns from Criminals PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Jul 23, 2008, 12:34 PM

Chicago police.jpgMayor Daley of Chicago challenged criminals in the city on Tuesday to turn in their guns this weekend in exchange for a $100 bounty. Last year, a similar gun buy-back program funded by corporate donors took a record 6,700 guns off Chicago streets.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, “on Saturday, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weiss is hoping to double that number. Guns can be turned in at 25 participating churches between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. – no questions asked – and swapped for a $100 prepaid Mastercard. BB, replica air guns can be exchanged for $10 prepaid cards.”

Last week, the value of the gun buy-back program came under fire at a City Council hearing on Chicago’s rising homicide rate. Dr. Carl Bell, the president and CEO of the Community Mental Health council and Foundation Inc., contended that turn-in programs don’t reduce gun violence since the guns the criminals return are useless or damaged.

According to the Sun-Times, “Daley’s plan to raise $1 million to bankroll gun buy-back programs got off to a slow start in a business community that’s also being called upon to bankroll Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid.”

Criminals can take full advantage of this program by selling guns they had used to commit a crime. They could rid themselves of incriminating evidence while getting a $100 gift card, compliments of the City of Chicago.
