| UN Gives Warning on Biofuels |

The BBC News reports that, “Mr. Ban was speaking at a meeting of the U.N.’s General Assembly called to discuss the global food and energy crisis. He believes a wholesale shift in government resources towards farming is vital to prevent millions more from suffering malnutrition.” He fears that larger economies are not looking into whether they had the balance right. But he insists biofuels are important for fighting climate change. Mr. Ban wants to establish new global guidelines to maintain an adequate supply of food. Mr. Ban warns that “over 100 million people could slide into hunger.” The secretary general is quoted by the BBC as saying, “we must act immediately to boost agricultural production this year. We do this by providing urgently needed seeds and fertilizers for the upcoming planting cycles, especially for the world’s 450 million small-scale farmers.” Mr. Ban stressed that individual governments should re-consider the subsidy and tariff protection policies they have adopted for growing biofuels.
