Kermit the Frog – a man in a neon green frog suit – led a protest against President Nicolas Sarkozy of France in Dublin, Ireland. He was joined by farmers, hardline Irish republicans, anti-motorway campaigners, fishermen, the Catholic Right and even ‘Victims of Irish Solicitors.’ They were kept away from the French presidential candidate as it rolled to Government Buildings for a ‘clear the air’ conference with the Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

The man in the frog suit, who only identified himself as Kermit, held a poster reading: ‘Hop it Sarko! Le people a dit non!,’ accompanied with a photograph of France’s First Lady in a bikini with the question, ‘Ou est Carla?’ He admitted that he was trying to add a sense of humor to the protests.

Demonstrators are upset that Sarkozy is trying to force Ireland to accept the Lisbon Treaty, which means the country must submit to the EU Constitution. However, the Irish voted overwhelmingly against the proposal.

According to the Times of London, “the largest element of the protest was the Irish Farmers’ Association which recommended a Yes in Ireland’s May referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, but only after extracting a pledge from the government that it would veto any move by Peter Mandelson, the EU trade commissioner to liberalize trade tariffs in the World Trade Organization talks in Geneva later this week.
