FEMA Ill-Prepared for another Katrina PDF Print E-mail

FEMA hurricane.jpgThe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is still not ready to respond to a Gulf Coast natural disaster similar to Hurricane Katrina despite its success in flooded Midwestern states.

The Houston Chronicle reports, “that’s the conclusion if an independent disaster researcher and key Texas officials who have monitored FEMA’s far-flung responses to flooding across Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri over the past few weeks.”

Challenges from the hurricane season remain daunting for FEMA. Plans for evacuations and temporary housing need to be made final, and residents need to be persuaded to assemble emergency kits with a 72-hour supply of food, water and medicines to give emergency crews time to reach them.

The upheaval across the Midwest pales by comparison to Katrina. Hence, the limited demands on FEMA in the Midwest leave some Texans wondering whether the agency could respond effectively on a far-greater scale.

According to the Chronicle, “FEMA would face challenges providing emergency housing and forcing evacuees to find temporary housing in communities across the country, said Michael Gerber, the top official of the Texas Housing and Community Affairs Department.
