ZIMBABWE AND THE LIBERAL MIND PDF Print E-mail
by William Murchison    Wed, Jul 2, 2008, 10:24 AM

For decades the rap, as admnistered by  good Western liberals, had an eerie sameness: : Imperialists bad;  freedom fighters, good.  Out of there, you smug,  gold-laced Churchillian types  with your topees and your gin-and-tonics.   Out of India!  Out of  Africa!  Out!  Out!

Nor did American liberals alone make up the chorus. Plenty of Brits declaimed against their overseas fiefdoms.  Worn-down Frenchmen and Dutchmen called for withdrawal from the plains and jungles of empire.  Empire, as we’d nowadays say, was so over.   The glorious dawn of independence was at hand, bathing in its lustrous rays...well, Robert Mugabe, among others.

Robert Mugabe, exalted oppressor of the Zimbabwean people; jailer of opponents; suppressor of every human right known to man and then some.  Robert Mugabe, all-round tyrant, despot, and jerk, as well as unwitting generator of  a certain nostalgia for the bad old days of topees and gin and tonics.

Maybe, after all, we think, watching Zimbabwe’s  plunge into the Dark Ages, amid economic ruination and the shutdown of civil liberties,  black isn’t automatically the color of virtue, nor  white the color of  viciousness. Maybe the old empires, which certainly had their demerits,  had as well some good  points. For one thing,  they’d allow you a fair trial.

Western liberal antipathy for empire and, at one time, the white-ruled relics of empire -- e.g., South Africa and Rhodesia -- never had much discernment about it.  The supposition was that when the colonial masters got kicked out, or left of their own accord,  native successors to power would initiate the reign of  freedom and justice and love.   It’s been, here and there, a little messier than that; a little rockier..

Zimbabwe  isn’t the only example, but it’s a good one.  After  Britain, the former colonial authority in Rhodesia, helped peel power away from Ian Smith’s rebel white regime,  Robert Mugabe governed for a time with some success.  Then he decided to become president for life.  Autocracy descended,  as did hunger and imprisonment. He seized the productive farmlands of the country’s then-numerous whites.   Racial mythology protected him.  He was black and, as the New York Times called him this week, “a revered liberation hero.”  The  whites were, well, white.

Not that whites were Mugabe’s most conspicuous victims; blacks were -- blacks like himself.  Whites had the money and motive to flee; not so the blacks he had killed or thrown in prison, or whom he shut out of power for demanding what had been represented to them as their lawful human rights.

White liberals abroad kept largely  quiet.  It was so embarrassing: a black oppressing blacks!  And with the implied acquiescence of other black African leaders happy to cut some slack for a revered liberation hero. Until now,  that is.  Now, when widely  acknowledged as the author of all Zimbabwe’s problems -- including an inflation rate of 2 million percent -- and the brazen thief of the most recent presidential election -- Mugabe seems to be wearing out his international welcome.

Kenyan President Raila Odinga calls recent developments in Zimbabwe “a shame and an embarrassment to Africa in the eyes of the international community.”  He calls on the African Union “to send troops to Zimbabwe” and restore order and justice.

A good idea, one would think.  There’s one more good idea.  It’s to cut the racial component out of  political discourse.  If we’re all for freedom and justice -- we are, aren’t we? --  it hardly makes sense to judge in racial terms, and racial terms alone,  the bona fides of  this or that government, this or that ruler.  We’re past that, aren’t we?   Or where would  Barack Obama stand in the electoral pecking order?

Of course, old habits die hard.  A Western liberal prone to excusing revered liberation heroes on the slightest grounds doesn’t automatically abandon the habit: which habit goes with sliming and slandering  white “imperialists.”    Not rational. Not useful in the full securing of  human rights. But soWestern liberal,  don’t you know?

I'm not clear on what exactly the point of this rant is. Are anti-imperialist or pro-native rule movements supposed to be invalidated by what's happening on Zimbabwe currently?

The attempt to link what happening in Zimbabwe with liberal spinelessness also seems really poor to me. The socialization of large farms in Zimbabwe began and continued under the current Bush administration, and if any actual action to prevent it was taken I'm not aware of it. Releasing a press statement condemning the take over of white owned farms knowing full well that it will be ignored can hardly be considered action by the way. I mean even the Thatcher administration funded the "willing buyer, willing seller" program which wasn't put to and end by the Blair administration.

Also, the statement that "gold-laced Churchillian types with your topees and your gin-and-tonics" indicates a serious lack of research on this. Churchill's serious desire to maintain the British Empire after World War 2 is pretty well documented. Simply looking up his brief biography on Wikipedia gives multiple examples of Churchill sending in the troops in the hopes of maintaining the British Empire.

You know, Boo or whoever you are, if you read what Bill wrote, you will see that he said that Western Liberals wanted the Curchillian types out. I suspect an actual reading of the rest of his column will give you a better idea of his point, too.

Rather odd. The facts suggest that it was the inhabitants of the particular countries were the ones who wanted those 'Churchillian types' out. Odd how their desires don't get a mention in this Tory screed of Mr. Murchison's.

as uaual, the Boo-types must blame Bush!!...What has happened to this country is tragic....as one who imported a superior cattle breed over 3000 years old from this country only to see the genetic pool destroyed by this "nut" & many good "white" (&black)farmers killed or their properties destroyed, the Libs should be happy!!..Let's see, their inflation rate?...$4M to $1!!...Wow!...the Social liberal-types should love this one!!

Mugabe’s retention of power is a product of the nobel savage myth. Someone should have ushered this murder, racist and thief off the worlds stage already. Third World leadership, if it is competent, becomes developed world leadership. China, India and Brazil seem to be moving in a better direction. They are not perfect societies, but if we are honest neither are we. However there is growing civil rights and economic progress in China, India and Brazil. Resource rich Zimbabwe under Mugabe is moving further into the darkness of a dank cave through abhorrent leadership. Many of his fellow African leaders are disgusted by how he his lead his country into a fetid quagmire.

Whoo Hoo!
Geez, Louizzze, does this make any sense? Are you running the A/C with the windows open? Has Meals on Wheels stopped checking on you and started just leaving the bag behind the screen door? (Is topee a toupee?)

Britain "declaimed" its empire? (Although I think you accidently used this word in this context because your writing doesn't support an extant vocabulary inclusive of "declaim", we'll try anyway. Admit it, you took it to mean Deee-Claim, like Deeee-Plane, not really to inveigh. Ha!) I think the EMPIRE (re: Gunga Din) morphed into the COMMONWEALTH (although there is argument as to how this worked out. Re: My Beautiful Laundrette.)

I'm pretty sure India, IndoChina, and, oh, the US used the methods they each possessed to move on. I *think* you're NOT saying we should have remained a colony just so we could have fair trials are you? Still, it might seem prescient for today, you know, FISA and all. Nonetheless, even South Africa. Although I think Canada is probably dilly-dallying.
White liberals kept quiet about Mugabe? Maybe YOUR white liberal, Rush (Fat) Limbaugh did, but I'm pretty sure Amnesty International has some choice words (re: Zimbabwe - the movie)
Liberals certainly haven't been quiet about Rawanda (re: Hotel Rawanda, re: We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families), nor Darfur (too new yet for much documenting), and so on. Oh, i think much of these were BlackOnBlack violence. OF course, LIBERALS were quite loud about South Africa where it was WHITE on BLACK/BROWN/GREEN, whatever. Missed your column on that. You must have been busy watching The Gods Must be Crazy.

For those that dont get it its like this:

Blacks are racists ...all black people? no just like not all whites

Its just the media has always put it on the doorstep of whites as the sole racists
national geographic which is widely read in scholl systems CLAIM that racism did not exist before European whites brought it into existence

get it now
White people who have no ax to grind are not going to put up with the racist label any longer
