According to CW News, “the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) convened by African Anglican bishops, will essentially announce a schism in the Anglican communion, according to the Telegraph story. The conservative bishops will say there is no realistic prospect for retaining unity among the world’s Anglican leaders, because of grave disagreements on doctrine and practice.” Anglican prelates, who are at odds with their liberal colleagues over the ordination of an openly gay American bishop, Gene Robinson, have called for the GAFCON meeting. Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has struggled to maintain unity due to these severe disagreements. Nigerian Archbishop Peter Akinola, the pre-emanate leader of the conservative wing, believes the struggle for unity is doomed. Archbishop Akinola is quoted by CW News as saying: “There is no longer any hope, therefore for a unified communion.” The GAFCON meeting will discuss a 89-page document called, ‘The Way, the Truth, and the Life,’ which details the conservative prelates’ disagreement with the Anglican mainstream, and argues why they can’t remain in communion.
