However, Will Lutz, blogging for Lone Star Report, called Perry's speech one of the most effective of his governorship. Perry said he is proud to govern a state where people respect human life and highlighted the parental notification and parental consent laws he helped to pass. One of Perry's better applause lines, Lutz writes, was on the subject of change. "When Democrats talk about change they really mean the change they'll be sucking out of your pockets, along with your dollar bills." He also pledged to restore the fire-damaged governor's mansion, to support more police on the border and to oppose giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.
Gardner Selby, writing for the Statesman, said Perry recapped measures adopted since he's been governor to restrict frivolous lawsuits and abortion, ban gay marriage, cut taxes and encourage job growth. He also promised to return a $10 billion surplus to taxpayers and called for passage of a voter I.D. bill, as did Dewhurst. Perry became governor in December 2000 after George W. Bush was elected president. He then won back-to-back 4-year terms in 2002 and 2006. He will have served 10 years in 2010, when the next election is scheduled. He initially supported Rudy Giuliani for president but called for Texans to rally around John McCain at the convention.
