Perry Rallies GOP Convention Crowd but Some Question Another Term PDF Print E-mail
by Carolyn Barta    Fri, Jun 13, 2008, 01:41 PM

rick perry.bmpConfetti reigned and Gov. Rick Perry was backed by a uniformed band as he rallied the Texas Republican Convention crowd in Houston, but not all delegates are persuaded he should win another term as governor, according to the Austin American-Statesman.  The Statesman quotes one delegate who said he prefers Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. He and other delegates took issue with Perry's advocacy of toll roads.

However, Will Lutz, blogging for Lone Star Report, called Perry's speech one of the most effective of his governorship. Perry said he is proud to govern a state where people respect human life and highlighted the parental notification and parental consent laws he helped to pass. One of Perry's better applause lines, Lutz writes, was on the subject of change. "When Democrats talk about change they really mean the change they'll be sucking out of your pockets, along with your dollar bills." He also pledged to restore the fire-damaged governor's mansion, to support more police on the border and to oppose giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.

Gardner Selby, writing for the Statesman, said Perry recapped measures adopted since he's been governor to restrict frivolous lawsuits and abortion, ban gay marriage, cut taxes and encourage job growth.  He also promised to return a $10 billion surplus to taxpayers and called for passage of a voter I.D. bill, as did Dewhurst.

Perry became governor in December 2000 after George W. Bush was elected president. He then won back-to-back 4-year terms in 2002 and 2006.  He will  have served 10 years in 2010, when the next election is scheduled. He initially supported Rudy Giuliani for president but called for Texans to rally around John McCain at the convention.

Maybe he is running because he has seen how hard it has been for Alberto Gonzales to get a job. What else can Perry do but be governor?

Governor 39% translations

Respect human life=execute as many as possible

Sucking out dollars from your pockets= fixing the Governor's mansion while Perry sits in a fancy rental house;creating a shortfall in tax revenue by only taxing sales and property;not insuring children, who are then forced to go to the ER, which increases your local county taxes instead;putting more police on the border, which is already covered by border patrol;returning a surplus when there is already a projected shortfall to come...add to the list here?
