Worsening Drug Wars Ravage Mexico PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, May 16, 2008, 04:51 PM

Cartel violence.jpgPalomas, a small frontier settlement, has one of the worst murder rates in Mexico. Even at funerals, violence runs rampant. The village straddles a main contraband route across the Mexican-U.S. border. Historically, the settlement has been a preserve of cattle rustlers, liquor, marijuana and gin smugglers long before cocaine rode into town.

The Times of London reports that, “this yea, though, as Mexico finds itself riven by a savage inter-cartel drug war that has already resulted in more than 1,100 deaths nationwide, the death toll has soared.”

37 Palomas residents have been shot dead since January. Another 17 have been abducted and a re still missing. Last week alone, nine inhabitants were killed. Two months ago, violence grew after the local crime boss in Palomas, Humberto del Hierro, disappeared.

In response to the dire nationwide crises, the casualties of which have included scores of police officers, President Felipe Calderon has deployed 25,000 troops to ten Mexican border cities since the beginning of the year. But the violence continues unabated in Palomas despite the arrival of 200 soldiers.

if something is not done to tighten the border re the illegal issue & win the drug war, we will see this in our cities in Texas, Arizona, & California. Then the liberals can look at a "third-world" country first-hand!!

Ken, are you stupid or just trying to be insulting? Nevermind.

We need to stop drug use in this country! I know it's more fun to shoot people & treating addiction is unglamorous & blaming Mexicans for everything is popular, but, as usual, we fail to see our problems as our own. The problem of drug wars lies in our insatiable need to escape the world that our Grand Culture has wrought. I know that's a strange statement, but it's more reasonable than saying, "Oh, what the hell, let's just shoot a few Mexicans," then we'll enjoy mom, apple pie & hotdogs.

Give me a break here already.

Grrr, for the life of me, I don't recall saying anything about "shooting" anyone, but if something isn't done, we will have the same type of culture you defend! We do have a problem, & I for one feel that we do not just need to turn our country over to a country that 12 million people have fled to either make a living or get away from the crime that infest it. Boy, did you "howl" when hit with the facts!

Grrr... You are the most anti American writing on this site. If you are so against America, why are you here? You have nothing positive to say. You add nothing to these conversations but irrational, emotional reaction. You sir, are the one that is insulting. You feel that if someone doesn't think or feel as you do then their opinions mean nothing.

Calling or asking someone if they are stupid, just because they do not agree with you? Shame!

And saying that it's America's fault that the drug trade exists... I'm sorry, I guess Canada is a nation of tea drinkers. I guess Europe and Asia have no drugs huh?

So I agree, stopping the rug use is indeed an answer. But what is easier destroying the production of drugs that enter our nation at known entries, or stopping fifty million people from using the drug. If you were going to pluf a hole, would you start at the narrow end of the funnel or at the wide end?

Try not to be so reactionary. People begin to think less of your opinions when you sound like a enraged mad man. It lessens your arguments, and it sounds less than dignified.
