Border Patrol to Check IDs’ During Hurricane Evacuations PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, May 16, 2008, 01:12 PM

Evac hurricanes.jpgPeople fleeing from hurricanes near the Texas-Mexico border in south Texas must still show their immigration paperwork to federal authorities.

According to the Houston Chronicle, “U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Thursday the plan to continue checking the citizenship of people at inland highway checkpoints about 75 miles north of the border in the event of a hurricane evacuation.”

Dan Doty, a spokesman for CBP’s Rio Grande Valley sector, told the San Antonio Express-News that the border patrol will check everybody regardless of hurricane evacuation procedures. Those found to be in the country illegally will be sent to detention centers and eventually deported.

Immigration activists worry that illegal immigrants will not evacuate from their homes in case of a hurricane emergency and Gov. Rick Perry’s office confirmed the state would prefer the checkpoints be closed during the evacuations.
