John Edwards Endorses Obama PDF Print E-mail
by Carolyn Barta    Wed, May 14, 2008, 05:50 PM

edwards obama.jpgJohn Edwards endorsed Barack Obama at a rally in Grand Rapids, Mich., after spending considerable time repeating his old stump speech and praising fellow candidate Hillary Clinton.  In the end, he said, it came down to who can turn two Americas into one.  He said the American people have made their choice and now he has also.

Edwards recently voted in his home state primary in North Carolina, which Obama won. He  releases his 19 pledged delegates that he won before getting out of the nomination race  on Jan. 30; he won no states. Both Obama and Hillary Clinton had sought Edwards' endorsement.  Edwards said he talked to Clinton about health care and jobs. Her health care plan is closer to his own and his wife Elizabeth favors Clinton's plan.  While he said Cliton has "strength and tenacity" he selected Obama as the candidate who can tear down the walls and close the divide between the two Americas (the haves and have-nots).

What Edwards said was not as important as the timing of his endorsement, coming on the heels of Clinton's big win in West Virginia, where she showed Obama's vulnerability among white, rural, older and low-income voters.  Edwards might be able to provide Obama entree to working class voters who supported him.  His endorsement also suggests he thinks the she should get out of the race and the party should begin to unify.

This would be a great ticket that can win in November.

Looks like Democrats are in a quandary. Working class whites and white women want Hillary to stay the course. Obama has over 90% of the black vote and they want Obama to head the ticket too. Edwards cheap racial shot at Hillary only made those working class white votes and white women to align themselves even more to Hillary. Edwards does not have any meaningful following among Hillary's followers as much as the general media would like him to have. Looks like that 40% beating Obama took in West Virginia opened a can of worms many within the general media & Democratic party leaders were trying to avoid coming out. Race is going to be prevalent in this election.

Without Sen Clinton on the ticket, it's Sen McCain's election to lose. If Sen McCain wins the election, the Democratic party will not survive as we know it today. Sen McCain is a very likeable man. He is an American war hero. I say the above as a political analyst. As a Democrat, I will support our nominee with my vote and money.

McCain may be likeable as a person but he is going to find it impossible to distance himself from the failed policies of Bush. He's also going to find it impossible to control the goon squads such as the Tennessee GOP which will drive all moderates and independents to vote Democratic.

Obama has a lot of baggage for a young man. That baggage will be his undoing at the DNC and if not, it will allow another 4 wonderful years with a republican president. Thanks Hillary.

It's fun to watch Republicans try to critique Hillary and Obama when they don't even have a candidate of their own that they like. The GOP's downfall is like watching a violent car crash. You just can't turn away, even though you know it is so bloody and devastating.
