Hector Flores Eyes Commissioner Seat PDF Print E-mail

hector flores.bmpWord on the street is that Elba Garcia won't be the only Hispanic seeking the Democratic nomination for the District 4 county commission seat currently held by Republican Kenneth Mayfield.  Hector Flores, past president of LULAC and a well-known Hispanic activist, also is taking a look.  The Irving Hispanic leader has been outspoken on immigration issues, such as opposition to Farmers Branch ordinances to control illegal immigration in that suburb. Political analysts say the district, which once tilted toward white conservative Republicans, is now 65 percent Hispanic and black.  Flores currently works in personnel at DISD.

Meanwhile, Dallas Councilwoman Garcia, who lives in Oak Cliff but just outside the district  boundaries reportedly has found a home inside the district. Mayfield, a former Cedar Hill School board member, has served as county commissioner since 1995 in the district that includes Cedar Hill, Cockrell Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Irving, Grand Prairie,  Coppell, Irving, parts of Oak Cliff and West Dallas.  Some minority political activists think Flores has a stronger following among Hispanics than Garcia.  Garcia, however, has the advantage of the analytical expertise and campaign savvy of her husband, former State. Rep. Domingo Garcia.

Mr. Flores' interest in the District 4 county seat will most likely attract many more potential candidates. A large field of candidates will almost certainly intiate a run-off for this position. Hopefully all of the potential candidates double check their citizenship status and make sure they were US citizens before they either filed for their individual voter registration card and/or cast their first vote. Certainly, the Democrat primary for this seat will be very interesting. I'll put my money on Garcia. Considering that Mayfield barely edged out Rose "Rosita" Renfro in his last election, I suspect that the Democrats might snag this seat in the next election - given the trend in Dallas County. Wish that race wasn't a factor - but it seems to be a political reality today. Note to Ken - better solidify your base and get prepared for a tough race!

Vico,,,,“Hopefully all of the potential candidates double check their citizenship status and make sure they were US citizens before they either filed for their individual voter registration card and/or cast their first vote. “ I would assume that most of the ‘candidates’ have already voted once before in their lives so there would be no need to ‘check’ citizen status….or are you assuming that if they are Hispanic that the citizen status should be doubled and tripled check just to be sure or maybe we could pass a law that would make the Hispanic vote count 1/3 of one person would that make you happy.

Manny, can you give some examples of 'anti Hispanic sentiment' in Dallas County? Problems facing Dallas Hispanics are the same issues Dallasites of all races encounter. In heavy Hispanic Oak Cliff this morning, there was a home invasion and at least two were killed and a third injured. As an attorney, I represent many Hispanic KIDS who are Heroin addicts. Heavy Hispanic populated Balch Springs is a very dangerous area. There's the Hispanic drop out rate. There are way too many Hispanic teens having babies. You know what happens to the babies of teen moms. It's time for a real change in Dallas.

Manny, I believe Vico's point is: It won't hurt to check to see if any of the soon to be announced candidates who are naturalized citizens cast their first vote as citizens of the USA before they actually became citizens of the USA. That should not be hard to find out since an investigative reporter now will have a smell to make such an inquiry. If there is nothing there, there is nothing there. If there is, well, that won't look good for that soon to be announced candidate. Politics is a contact sport, right?

The last several candidate Domingo Garcia supported all got their butts kicked, in Farmers Branch with Barry Grubbs, Jose Galvez a latino candidate who was opposed by Domingo, won 95% of the Latino vote, he was supported by Quintanilla, the Mayoral candidate in Irving, Rigo Reza got whupped and received only 800 plus votes and if that is a track record, Elba is in trouble, it is who will be able to deliver the vote.

Hector Flores called Elba today and announced he is supporting her if she runs.The votes in Farmers Branch and Irving are all exhibits 1 in the redistricting lawsuits that are pending.We expect to win these just like we won 14-1.It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. If it is true about Hector supporting Elba if she runs it sure looks like his public interest in the Dallas County Commissioner District 4 race was all smoke & mirrors in the first place. Was this a ploy to encourage possible opponents from diving into the race?

What other Conflict of Interest does Elba have, Domingo I sure would like to know.

I am sure that if it is not Hector Flores, it will be someone else. Me think, the it is time for Change in the Fiefdom of Domingo Garcia Politics.

Another question, DG supported Barrack Obama and also got wupped, Latinos voted over 80% for Hillary. explain that track record.

Roger...I did not necessarily say Dallas but just look at the way farmers branch, Irving and now maybe Carrolton are acting, take a look at the news,,,, raids of people in Iowa,,,yes Iowa, sending a deputized mob into a heavy Hispanic barrio looking for infraction so that they could have an excuse to ask for status, stopping vans and buses headed to Mexico just to add a crime charge to some random brown guy,,,,, the problem is brown people. Do you ever remember or can site where we did this to the Italians, Germans or the Irish mobs of immigrants. How are Hispanic problems different than any other problems common to minorities, all the problems that you cite happened in the 70's, 80's,90's and now. Hello Hispanic drug use, drop out rate and teen pregnancy pick a decade. What change are you talking about senor? What would be a real change??
Richard you make my point in two ways why would we check when they voted and what they were [resident or citizen] but if you want that then we should do it for everybody …… and you assume that they might be naturalized...AGAIN why because they’re Hispanic.
