Metroplex says no to illegal immigration PDF Print E-mail
by Will Lutz    Mon, May 12, 2008, 04:40 PM
In case anyone at the Capitol is in doubt, concern in suburbia about illegal immigration is definitely not limited to the Houston metropolitan area. In local elections Saturday, Farmers Branch voters elected Tim O'Hare as the new Mayor of Farmers Branch. As a city council member, O'Hare championed an ordinance that prohibits landlords from renting to illegal immigrations, a move that received national publicity. A link to the article on O'Hare's victory (and how the immigration issue played in other local races) is posted below.

Another key race occurred in Carrollton, where incumbent mayor Becky Miller was defeated by Ron Branson. Like all elections, there were lots of local issues that played a key role in this race, and a late-breaking scandal where Miller was accused of fabricating details about her personal life also played a substantial role in the outcome. That said, Branson is a major supporter of taking action against illegal immigration, praised O'Hare in his campaign, and promised regular meetings with the new mayor of Farmers Branch.
Meanwhile, the incumbents got re-elected in the City of Irving. While some of the challengers did want more aggressive immigration enforcement, it's worth noting that the City of Irving already has an aggressive immigration enforcement program. It participates in the federal government's Criminal Alien Program, where the federal authorities are notified whenever any illegal immigrant is arrested for committing a crime in Irving.

The immigration issue squarely puts the interest of Republican donors at odds with the strongly-held views of the vast majority of Republican voters. Many in the GOP money crowd belive it's fine for businesses to exploit cheap, illegal labor that doesn't require benefits and wants the government to either provide amnesty (though they do not label it as such) or look the other way, regardless of the consequences to America's national security or the rule of law. Most Republican voters want aggressive immigration enforcement now. The GOP has massaged this issue with careful rhetoric and a little campaign cash. But the recent Metroplex elections show it's only a matter of time before the Legislature's inaction on this issue will affect the ballot box ...

Will, I don't see any change.

Farmers Branch is still FB.

The Carrollton mayor election was a result of Miller's fabrications, not a referendum on immigrantion.

Hardliners lost in Irving.

Nobody but Farmers Branch wants to go hardline, and FB does it to peddle vacant homes.

I also think you've exaggerated the debate.

Many in the GOP money crowd believe it's fine for businesses to hire workers and pay them without government interference or regulation.

Most Republican voters support law enforcement, but I don't see a majority demanding "aggressive" action from the Legislature.

I think that a more appropriate title for this post would be "Three out of Fifty Metroplex Cities say no to Illegal Immigration."

Becky Miller lost because of Becky Miller, and Tim O hare won with only a couple thousand votes, that represents a very insignificant number of people living in the "Metroplex",

That will not play in the real Dallas Metroplex, try it and see if those activist don't mobilize hundreds of thousands of people to the streets and to the polls and give you guys the country whipping of your lives.

I am sick and tired of losing my country and my city to the incerasing amount of illegal immagrants. The thought of more and more of them coming over here makes me want to vomit. I look at it this way if you are an illegal, then you should be brought up on charges of espionage, for crossing the boarders during a time of war. And with the true fashion, that has been shown by other countries i.e. russia, isreal, and others, when brought up on these charges, you should be shot till dead. Now I do know that there are a lot of them out there, but I just dont care anymore, these people are, crossing the river on monday and by wensday they have a car/truck, criedt cards, and on there way to getting a house. And here i am a working man, in his own country of birth, and I cant get a chance at a home, or car, or anything, because of those stinking, slimy illegal immagrants. They are causing our hospitals to fold, they are driving the cost of education up, and the cost of everything else with it. And if all of this was not bad enough, when they max out one card, they go out and get another one under another name or just go to a Mexican friendly bank, i.e. Bank of America.
Now I do not want to sound like a crazy person, all of what I have written can be proved by statments given to the media. So, I dont want to hear it. And it seems to me that the big leader of the whole problem is this so-called friendly group call lulac, they are the ones, it seems, that have started all of this, if not more. Now, i want to bring one point to the table here, and that is this, if one of us, moved to another country, like japan. We would be expected to learn the speach of the land, not the land learn ours, that is just stupid.
Now my thought is this either the mexicans are to lazy to learn american, or to stupid.
