British Prisoners Can Carry Magic Wands PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, May 12, 2008, 02:00 PM

Pagan wizard.jpgPrison wardens in Great Britain have been instructed to let pagan inmates keep twigs in their cells to use as wands. Guards have been told to permit prisoners to collect and decorate twigs which they need for their rituals.

The Daily Mail of London reports that, “it is the latest in a series of rulings to protect convicts’ rights and ensure equality among different faiths.”

Followers of other religions are allowed items such as prayer mats to allow them to worship. Justice Reform Minister Maria Eagle announced the new policy regarding pagans in a parliamentary answer session.

Ms. Eagle is quoted by the Mail as saying, “prison service policy is to ensure prisoners of different faiths, traditions, including paganism, to protect their religion. Religious artifacts are allowed for relevant faiths, within the constraints of good order and discipline. The religious artifacts for pagan prisoners include flexible twigs for a wand.”
