In Europe, young adults deliberately binge on alcohol and drugs to improve their sex lives. Great Britain has one of the worst reputations for binge drinking and under-aged sex, but there are remarkable similarities between other European countries as well, a study found.

The BBC News reports that, “a third of 16 to 35-year-old men and 23% of women questioned said they drank to increase their chance of sex. The study – of 1,341 young people in nine countries including the UK – is published in BMC Public Health.”

While under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the study found that young people were at greater risk of unsafe sex. Young people were questioned in nine cities, one each in the UK, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Slovenia – who all routinely visited pubs, bars and nightclubs.

According to the BBC, “drunkenness and drug use were found to be strongly associated with an increase in risk taking behavior and feeling regretful about having sex.”
