Hezbollah Leader Declares War in Beirut PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Thu, May 8, 2008, 04:56 PM

Beirut war.bmpOn Thursday in downtown Beirut, gunfire broke out after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said recent Lebanese government actions amount to “a declaration of open war.”

CNN reports that, “there are reports of open street battles in at least one neighborhood. Video showed people throwing stones at each other, as Lebanese soldiers used tear gas to dispense the crowds.”

But the violence is limited to Beirut’s Shiite and Sunni neighborhoods and has continued into the evening hours. Lebanese government forces have not yet reacted to the violence.

There were no reports of violence in Beirut’s Christian neighborhoods. Journalists and witnesses described a long line of cars on the main road leading out of Beirut after the violence erupted.

Nasrallah is quoted by CNN as saying, “we believe the war has started, and we believe we have the right to defend ourselves. We will cut the hand that will reach out to the weapons of resistance, no matter if it comes from the inside or outside.”
